SES holds successful First Hybrid and 11th Annual Conference

The Social Ethics Society hosted its First Hybrid and 11th Annual Conference, held at San Isidro Parish Hall, Marilog District, Davao City on October 26, 2020. The theme of the event is Philosophy in the Midst of the Pandemic. Topics include the Capability Approach and Human Development, Religion in the Time of Covid-19, Philippine Democracy, and the Future of Muslim Mindanao. The plenary speakers were Prof. Ian Clark Parcon and Atty. Jamil Matalam. The paper presenters, both online and in-person, were Dr. Moises Torrentira of the University of Southeastern Philippines, Mr. Giovanni Udtohan of the University of Mindanao, Mr. Aldrin Quintero of Notre Dame of Marbel University, and Mr. Gerry Arambala of La Salle University - Ozamiz. SES elects new set of officers

The Social Ethics Society has elected a new set of officers: Fr. Dexter Veloso (President), Dr. Roger Bayod (VP), Dr. Moises Torrentira (Sec), Fr. Banny Pardillo (Treas), Dr. Randy Tudy (Aud), Prof. Ian Clark Parcon (PIO),. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc (BOD - Chair), Mr. Menelito Mansueto (BOD - Mindanao), and Mr. Gerry Arambala (BOD - Visayas) were likewise appointed by Fr. Veloso to the new BOD. Dr. Maboloc, who presided the election, thanked Dr. Aldrin Quintero and the former officers for their services. The election was held right after the hybrid conference of the SES on October 26, 2020 at San Isidro Parish Hall, in Marilog District, Davao City. The term of office of the new officers starts immediately. The By-Laws of the SES was amended during the Assembly. The provision restricting the president from serving more than one term was amended. The motion was then passed unanimously. Meanwhile, the new BOD also approved the resolution approving the membership roster for 2020.

SES members actively participate in IPHA Conference hosted by AUSN

Several members of the Social Ethics Society have actively participated in the International Public Health and Bioethics Conference (virtual) hosted by the Eubios Ethics Institute and the American University of Sovereign Nations. These include Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr., Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, Fr. Dexter Veloso, Dr. Al Quillope, Dr. Sherlito Sable, Mr. Aldrin Quintero, Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Dr. Randy Teody, and Mr. Gerry Arambala. Dr. Moises Torrentira of the University of Southeastern Philippines will be presenting his paper in the 11th IPHA. "The IPHA gives SES members international exposure and the opportunity to engage with foreign scholars in an open atmosphere of real dialogue," says Dr. Maboloc, SES co-founder, who is a visiting professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations.

Gerry Arambala to present seminal research on the relationship between CA and genetics

Gerry Arambala, chair of philosophy at La Salle University in Ozamiz, will present his seminal research on the relationship between the Capability Approach and genetic engineering in the first SES Hybrid conference this October 26, 2020. The virtual event will be attended by 83 SES members nationwide. Arambala has previously published a paper on the subject matter in the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics.

Radical Democracy Research in Mindanao: A Report

On September 2018, the Ateneo de Davao University, through its University Research Council, awarded a research grant to Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, for his study on "Radical Democracy in the Philippines." Dr. Maboloc has since published five papers here and abroad while three papers are forthcoming. Five other young researchers have also published outstanding papers on President Duterte's radical politics.  The purpose of the study was to provide an alternative narrative to the usually dominant voice of Manila scholars in assessing the politics of the 16th president of the Philippines. Dr. Maboloc has also delivered the paper "Post-Colonial Politics and the Grammar of Dissent: Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte" at Nagoya University in Japan. He was accompanied by Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College, who delivered a paper on IP rights.  In addition, the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy released a Special Issue on President Duterte in 2018, publishing

11th SES Conference to be held as a Hybrid event

The 11th Annual Social Ethics Society will be conducted as a hybrid event (online and in-person) this coming October 26, 2020. It will be held at the San Isidro Parish Hall in the scenic Marilog District, Davao City. IATF-DOH-LGU protocols will be observed. The hybrid conference will consist of a physical event of 10-15 people and an online link via Zoom. The event is hosted by Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES BOD chair. The SES will also hold the election of officers on the said day.
