SES in 2021 - A Celebration of Meaningful Undertakings

  The Social Ethics Society ended 2021 with a meaningful gathering at Balai Torrentira in Davao City, celebrating the successful events organised by the association during the year. The year-round activities include the World Logic Day, the 2021 Webinar Series, the SES - USEP Writeshop, the 12th SES Conference, and the Philippine Democracy Virtual Forum. The SES is proud to have invited global scholars to its undertakings, including Dr. Juichiro Tanabe, Dr. John Weckert, Dr. Layne Hartsell, Dr. Daniel Mishori, and Ms, Asuna Yoshizawa. Dr. Darryl Macer, Dr. Julio Teehankee, and Mr. Anton Heinrich Rennesland were the plenary speakers for the 12th edition of the annual conference. The association of Philosophy teachers in Mindanao also recognised its Most Published and Most Cited members, including upcoming scholars Gerry Arambala and Migs Mansueto. SES organizes Donation Drive for the victims of Super Typhoon Odette

The Social Ethics Society has organized a Donation Drive for the victims of Typhoon Odette. The SuperTyphoon brought massive destruction on December 16, 2021. People in the Visayas and Northern Mindanao need basic necessities like water, food, shelter, and clothing. Due to the big logistics problem at this time, the SES will send cash donations through charity channels on the ground. The members of the SES and other individuals can also send their donation via Land Bank. Name of Account: Rogelio Bayod Account Number: 0336194636 The SES Board will meet on December 30 to gather all donations and immediately wire or deposit to charities all the funds that have been collected. The situation in the hard-hit areas remain dire. Thousands are still without electricity or drinking water. Menelito Mansueto Jr.: The dynamic young scholar from Bohol

One of the finest young scholars to emerge in the midst of a turbulent politics in Philippine Society comes from Bohol. A student of the late Dr. Eddie Babor, in whose time as leader and president of PHAVISMINDA, philosophy became an important fixture outside of the capital, Mr. Menelito Mansueto Jr. is a full-time faculty member at the Philosophy Department of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology. Mansueto has written extensively on Philippine Democracy and Mass Media, the Value System in Philippine History, a chapter in the book Ethics in Contemporary Philippine Society, and President Rodrigo Duterte's radical approach to politics. He has taught at the University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University - Diliman, and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila. He is a member of the Board of the Social Ethics Society. 

Dr. Moises Torrentira Jr.: SES Most Read development scholar

  Dr. Moises Torrentira Jr., associate professor at the University of Southeastern Philippines, is the Social Ethics Society's Most Read development scholar in ResearchGate, with 169,571 reads and the fourth Most Cited member of the SES. A young and dynamic leader, Dr. Torrentira also has a degree in Urban Planning and is the president of the MIT Institute in Davao City, a school that specializes in urban planning and development. 

Dr. Rogelio Bayod: The academic scholar as a development worker

  One of the the oldest myths when it comes to academia is to think that the scholar is bereft of meaningful and practical contributions to human development. The idea is to find the balance in order to succeed as a scholar and a development worker. Dr. Rogelio Bayod, who is a Visiting Professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN) and professor of ethics at Cor Jesu College, is a case in point. Dr. Bayod has been immersed in conflict communities and has learnt about their way of life. In the process  he has been giving advice and training to local government units in Davao del Sur on leadership and development planning. He leads the biggest organization of campus advisers in the Philippines. At the same time, he is the third Most Cited Social Ethics Society (SES) member in Google Scholar and the third Most Read in ResearchGate.  "Poverty is not about the lack of resources. Dr. Randy Tudy is Most Read SES member in ResearchGate

Dr. Randy Tudy, formerly of Cor Jesu College and now with the Commission on Higher Education, is the Most Read member of the Social Ethics Society in ResearchGate with 57,285 reads. He is followed by Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University with 55,767 reads and Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College with 54,657.  Meanwhile, Dr. Maboloc is the Most Cited SES member in Google Scholar with 125 citations. He is followed by Dr. Jeffry Ocay of the Eastern Visayas State University with 96 citations and Dr. Bayod with 76 citations. "Citations mean that we have contributed to human knowledge," says Prof. Gerry Arambala, chair of Philosophy at La Salle University. 

Jubail Wee Pasia to speak in International Climate Change Webinar

  Engr. Jubail Wee Pasia of Manila Water and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University have been invited as speakers in the Youth Climate Series, an international Webinar hosted by The Asia Foundation. Pasia will discuss community empowerment towards climate resiliency this December 11, 2021 while Maboloc will speak about climate change education on January 8, 2022.  Dr. Layne Hartsell, research professor at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, says that the theme of the event is "The 3Es of sustainability - Economy, Ecology and Equity." The webinar will be participated in by students and youth climate activists from Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. The Asia Foundation is based in Washington D.C., USA. 

Topnotch Researchers join the Social Ethics Society

Topnotch researchers and academics have joined the roster of members of the Social Ethics Society. The new SES members include Dr. Rec Eguia of the University of Southeastern Philippines, Prof. Bernardo Caslib Jr of the University of the Philippines in Manila, Prof. Anton Heinrich Rennesland of the University of Santo Tomas, Dr. Roberto Roldan Jr of Abra State Institute of Science and Technology, Dr. Joezenon Purog of the Eastern Visayas State University, Mr. Glenford Franca of SPAMAST, and Prof. Roland Aparece of the University of Bohol. The Board of Directors approved their induction into the SES on the basis of the recommendation by Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, SES Chair. 

Ian Clark Parcon is new Managing Editor of SES Journal

    Prof. Ian Clark Parcon of Ateneo de Davao University has been appointed by the Social Ethics Society Board as Managing Editor of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy. Prof. Parcon joins Dr. Peter Paul Elicor, Dr. Rogelio Bayod, and Dr. Randy Tudy, editors of the journal. The SES Journal publishes original papers in applied ethics, practical philosophy, political theory, continental philosophy, and development theory. The journal is indexed in the Andrew Gonzalez Philippine Citation Index, the ASEAN Citation Index, and the Philosopher's Index.

SES holds successful 12th Annual Conference (Virtual)

The Social Ethics Society has concluded its 12th Annual Conference which was held virtually, October 29-30, 2021. Dr. Darryl Macer, the Keynote Speaker, provided the context with which human society can proceed by means of ethics and human rights in the post-pandemic world. Mr. Anton Heinrich Rennesland, the Plenary Speaker for the Philosophy section, shared his reflections on how human society must be designed using a critical vantage point against the forces of globalization. Dr. Julio Teehankee, the Plenary Speaker for the Politics section, explained the nature of Philippine politics, and the theoretical underpinnings on the power of the Presidential system of government and how it impacts the lives of the people. SES to hold Public Forum (Online) on the 2022 National Elections

The Social Ethics Society will hold a Public Forum on the Future of Philippine Democracy: The 2022 National Elections later this month. The speakers will be Fr. Dexter Veloso  (XACOSE), A/Prof. Migs Mansueto (MSU-IIT), Dr. Randy Tudy (CHED), Dr. Rogelio Bayod (Cor Jesu), and Prof. Ian Clark Parcon (Ateneo). "The activity is in line with the good governance advocacy role of the organization," says Dr, Christopher Ryan Maboloc, SES Board Chairman. The speakers will give varying perspectives and insights on the forthcoming elections, including their opinions on the potential candidates, and the issues that the electorate need to understand.

Faisha Mae Tangog to present paper in the 21st Asian Bioethics Conference

Ms. Faisha Mae Tangog, a student of Dr. Rogelio Bayod at Cor Jesu College, will be a co-presentor with her mentor Dr. Bayod, in the 21st Asian Bioethics Conference this coming August 29 to September 1, 2021. They will present the paper "Defending Moral Obligation: Duterte's Dauntless War on Drugs." The ABC will be participated in by bioethicists, medical researchers, and public health experts from the US, Japan, Germany, India, New Zealand, and Malaysia, among others. This year's conference will deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Four members of the Social Ethics Society will take part in the 21st ABC Conference this month. Dr. Darryl Macer, President of the American University of Sovereign Nations, leads the list of the confirmed Plenary Speakers in the 12th Social Ethics Society Annual Conference this coming October 29-30, 2021. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is Conference Chair. Dr. Julio Teehankee, Full Professor at De La Salle University, will also speak in the virtual event. The theme of the conference is "Democratic Inclusion and Transdisciplinarity." The talks are divided into three sections: Philosophy, Bioethics and Political Theory. Most Read and Most Cited SES Members in ResearchGate and Google Scholar

Two professors from Cor Jesu College were ranked number 1 and 3 among the members of the Social Ethics Society as the Most Read in ResearchGate. Dr. Randy Tudy has 51,973 reads and 26 citations while Dr. Rogelio Bayod has 39,302 and 60 citations respectively, as of July 6, 2021.  Meanwhile, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University has 103 citations, which ranks number 1 and 45,218 reads, which ranks number 2, while Dr. Jeffry Ocay of the Eastern Visayas State University has 81 citations, which ranks 2nd and 17,373 reads, which ranks 4th, among the members of the SES.  The SES, which is based in Mindanao, is a duly registered professional organization of philosophy, social science, and development scholars, teachers, researchers and graduate students. The above citations report was based on the information gathered from ResearchGate and Google Scholar. 

Prof. Gerry Arambala, radical democracy scholar, to deliver talk on political dynasties

Prof. Gerry Arambala will talk about political dynasties in local and national politics on July 8, 2021 in a virtual forum sponsored by La Salle University Ozamiz. The chair of LSU's philosophy department is one of the radical democracy scholars in the country. He has published indexed papers and chapters on President Duterte.  Other philosophy professors from Mindanao who have published prominent papers on the subject matter of radical leadership include Dr. Rogelio Bayod and Prof. Benjiemen Labastin. SES members Prof. Menelito Mansueto of Letran and Mr. Ruben Balotol of VSU have also discussed the impact of the President on Philippine politics and governance.  All combined, together with the works of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, who pioneered the research on radical democracy in the Philippines with a grant awarded by the Ateneo de Davao University in 2017, more than 20 papers have since been published in indexed journals here and abroad. 

A call for social thinkers to rise above their eccentricity

  Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc has published a chapter on Nanotechnology and Artificial Intelligence in Integrated Science: Science without Borders, Edited by Nima Rezaei, and published by Springer. The chapter discusses the origin of nanotechnology and the social issues related to its development. The author also tackled AI and its implications to society.  The book Integrated Science consists of 22 chapters written by topnotch international authors covering the most relevant and novel research in all areas of formal sciences, physical and chemical sciences, biological sciences and the social sciences. The editor, Dr. Nima Rezaei, is a research scientist in the field of immunology who has published more than 800 papers. Dr. Cesar Tecson will give a lecture in the final leg of the 2021 Social Ethics Society Webinar Series this July 6, 2021. Dr. Tecson, who obtained his doctorate in computer science at Ateneo de Manila University, will talk about "Technology and Culture: How Technology can Preserve the Past." The theme of the virtual event, to be hosted by Dr. Roger Bayod, is Philosophical Perspectives in the Margins. Dr. Tecson has worked on a project concerning the preservation of the culture of the B'laan Tribe. This topic is an emerging perspective in modern pedagogy that seeks to develop democratic methods of teaching while being critical at the same time. Migs Mansueto, Bohol's Rising Scholar, to give Opening Remarks in SES Lecture Series

Menelito "Migs" Mansueto is not your typical scholar. He is not the silent type "pen and paper" academician. Migs is a graduate of Holy Name University and a student of the late Eddie Babor, notably the most prominent philosopher from Bohol who was formerly the president of PHAVISMINDA. Today, the young scholar from Bohol is the rising star when it comes to critical thought and political philosophy. He has taught at the University of Santo Tomas, FEU-Diliman and presently, at Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Dr. Daniel Mishori of Tel Aviv University will headline as Guest Lecturer in the last leg of the 2021 SES Webinar Series. The theme is "Philosophical Perspectives in the Margins". The virtual event will be held this July 6, 2021 from 2PM to 6PM. Dr. Mishori will discuss biopolitics and medical technocracy. The other speakers for this event are Mr. Gerry Arambala of La Salle University - Ozamiz, Dr. Cesar Tecson of Cor Jesu College, and Dr. Godiva Eviota of Mindanao State University - Marawi Campus. K. Pastrana and CRB Maboloc to present ICT ethics paper in International Conference

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc and his former research assistant Ms. Kathleen Pastrana will present a research paper on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) using the framework of the computer ethics expert and Australian philosopher John Weckert in the 17th International Public Health Conference hosted by the American University of Sovereign Nations, a global educational institution based in Arizona, USA. The paper, with the title "John Weckert's Ethics of Technology: Social Implications in the Digital Age," will tackle a host of issues, including monitoring, surveillance, the right to privacy and the role of women in ICT. Ms. Pastrana is a Mass Communication graduate and formerly the Public Information Officer of the University of Southeastern Philippines. The virtual conference, which will be participated in by researchers from the US, Japan, India, Turkey, Malaysia, and Spain, among others, will be held this coming May 28 & 29, 2021.

Peter Singer to speak in UPLB Philosophy Conference

Australian philosopher Peter Singer will give the Opening Remarks in the Philosophical Society of the University of the Philippines - Los BaƱos Conference this coming May 22, 2021. The theme of the undergraduate conference is "Timeless Pillars Reaching New Horizons."  Vice President Leni Robredo will also deliver a message in the virtual event. The two plenary speakers are Dr. Jacklyn Cleofas of UPLB and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University. The two speakers were classmates in the class of Dr. Leovino Garcia at the Ateneo de Manila University.
