SES to host international scholars in 2021 Webinar Series

In lieu of the canceled 10th SES Conference due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Social Ethics Society will host international scholars in a series of webinars next year. The speakers include Dr. Juichiro Tanabe (Kumamoto University), Dr. John Weckert (Charles Sturt University), Dr. Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn), Dr. Daniel Mishori (Tel Aviv University), and Ms. Asuna Yoshizawa (Osaka University). Local scholars and SES members have also been tapped as co-speakers, namely Dr. Al Quiloppe (NDMU), Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc (ADDU), Dr. Randy Tudy (CJC), Fr. Banny Pardillo (St. Francis Seminary), Dr. Roger Bayod (CJC), Dr. Godiva Eviota (MSU), and Mr. Migs Mansueto (Letran).  "Our intent is to bring top caliber international scholars to Mindanao," the SES said. The topics will cover various disciplines and themes. The online events are set for January, March, April, May, and July. The Notre Dame of Marbel University, through Dr. Quiloppe, will host the talk of Dr. Weckert.

SES Journal to expand reach

The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy seeks to expand its reach, according to the Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, the organization's policy making body. With Dr. Randy Tudy and Dr. Roger Bayod joining the editorial board, the journal opens itself to the ASEAN region, especially those who are into development theory as well as public administration. While the journal was primarily conceived for philosophy and ethics, the BOD stressed that it is also cross-, inter-, and trans-, disciplinary. The intent is to encourage more contributions from international scholars, it adds. 

Dr. Bayod is the permanent representative of the SES in the Union of Societies and Associations of Philosophy in the Philippines

Dr. Rogelio Bayod, vice president of the Social Ethics Society, will be the permanent representative of the organization in the Union of Societies and Associations of Philosophy in the Philippines. This is the content of the memorandum appoved by Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president. The authority to attend meetings in behalf of the SES is granted solely to Dr. Bayod. It is the same with any engagement with USAPP or any other organization, in which every decision will require prior approval of the SES Board.  

Menelito Mansueto is appointed to the Board of SES

Menelito Mansueto of Colegio de San Juan de Letran has been appointed by Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president, upon the recommendation of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, chairman of the Board, as liaison officer for Luzon of the Social Ethics Society. Mr. Mansueto will likewise have a seat in the Board of Directors, together with Mr. Adrian Udtohan (Mindanao) and Mr. Gerry Arambala (Visayas). His term is from January 2021 to October 2023. Mr. Mansueto is taking a doctorate in communications at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He has taught philosophy at the University of Santo Thomas and at Far Eastern University - Diliman.

SES to hold two online lectures on World Logic Day

The Social Ethics Society will hold two lectures on World Logic Day, from 2 to 5pm, on the 14th of January 2021. Dr. Juichiro Tanabe of Kumamoto University and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo will headline the event. Dr. Tanabe will talk about "The logic of Peace in Oriental Philosophy," while Dr. Maboloc will discuss "Language, Logic and the Mind." Dr. Roger Bayod and Dr. Randy Tudy will be the webinar hosts. Fr. Dexter Veloso, president of the SES, reveals that the webinar is the first of many planned for 2021. The event will be held via zoom and fb live. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc presents papers in 10 international virtual conferences in 2020

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc has presented papers in 10 virtual international conferences this year, particularly in the conferences hosted by the Arizona-based American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN) in which he is a visiting professor, the Eubios Ethics Institute, and in the Universal Science Education Research Network (USERN) Congress. The research papers deal with his philosophical reflections on Covid-19 as well as the philosophy of technology, post-pandemic. "Our present situation has been a challenge but at the same time it is also an opportunity to engage with global scholars," he says.  Local academicians in Mindanao have also been active in their international engagements, which Dr. Maboloc says is important because "the universe is such a big place and there is always room for everyone to develop his or her potential." SES Board of Directors appoints Dr. Randy Tudy and Dr. Roger Bayod as new editors of SES Journal

Dr. Rogelio Bayod and Dr. Randy Tudy have been appointed as editors of the Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy. The Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, in a special meeting, has accepted the resignation of Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr. and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, respectively. Both served as editors for five (5) years since the maiden issue of the journal. Dr. Peter Paul Elicor will remain as editor of the journal and will be joined by Dr. Bayod and Dr. Tudy, two internationally published researchers from Cor Jesu College who specialize in development research. Dr. Maboloc, who inhibited himself from the deliberations, explained after the meeting that the new editors will give a new perspective and fresh ideas to the journal, especially in terms of its original vision of empowering Mindanao-based researchers and scholars. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc wins 2020 PAP Public Intellectual Prize

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc has been awarded the prestigious 2020 Public Intellectual Prize by the Philosophical Association of the Philippines (PAP). The Board of Judges deemed that the opinion pieces of Dr. Maboloc "exemplify how philosophical thinking could be done in the public sphere." The PAP will confer the award on November 21, 2020 during its annual General Assembly via Zoom. Dr. Maboloc has contributed 120 social and political commentaries to the Philippine Daily Inquirer from 2014 to 2019. He is an associate professor at the Ateneo de Davao University and a visiting professor for Global Justice at the American University of Sovereign Nations. Dr. Maboloc has published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including a dozen plus indexed by Scopus. The writings of the scholar deal with radical politics, disability rights, and the philosophy of technology. Fr. Veloso and SES hint at future plans

Founded in 2010, the Social Ethics Society has brought the best scholars to Mindanao, including Daniel Mishori, Wataru Kusaka, and Zosimo Lee. One man made all these things possible - Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president. The SES is the first and only philosophical association in Mindanao registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission. Fr. Veloso has a no nonsense type of charismatic leadership and has in fact elevated the SES step by step into internationalization. Through his initiative, SES members have joined conferences in Japan and Thailand. He has also secured funding for the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy. "Fr. Dex makes things possible for us," says Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, who founded the SES with the late Dr. Romy Bautista. "Young teachers like him and we see him as our cornerstone," he added. SES holds successful First Hybrid and 11th Annual Conference

The Social Ethics Society hosted its First Hybrid and 11th Annual Conference, held at San Isidro Parish Hall, Marilog District, Davao City on October 26, 2020. The theme of the event is Philosophy in the Midst of the Pandemic. Topics include the Capability Approach and Human Development, Religion in the Time of Covid-19, Philippine Democracy, and the Future of Muslim Mindanao. The plenary speakers were Prof. Ian Clark Parcon and Atty. Jamil Matalam. The paper presenters, both online and in-person, were Dr. Moises Torrentira of the University of Southeastern Philippines, Mr. Giovanni Udtohan of the University of Mindanao, Mr. Aldrin Quintero of Notre Dame of Marbel University, and Mr. Gerry Arambala of La Salle University - Ozamiz. SES elects new set of officers

The Social Ethics Society has elected a new set of officers: Fr. Dexter Veloso (President), Dr. Roger Bayod (VP), Dr. Moises Torrentira (Sec), Fr. Banny Pardillo (Treas), Dr. Randy Tudy (Aud), Prof. Ian Clark Parcon (PIO),. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc (BOD - Chair), Mr. Menelito Mansueto (BOD - Mindanao), and Mr. Gerry Arambala (BOD - Visayas) were likewise appointed by Fr. Veloso to the new BOD. Dr. Maboloc, who presided the election, thanked Dr. Aldrin Quintero and the former officers for their services. The election was held right after the hybrid conference of the SES on October 26, 2020 at San Isidro Parish Hall, in Marilog District, Davao City. The term of office of the new officers starts immediately. The By-Laws of the SES was amended during the Assembly. The provision restricting the president from serving more than one term was amended. The motion was then passed unanimously. Meanwhile, the new BOD also approved the resolution approving the membership roster for 2020.

SES members actively participate in IPHA Conference hosted by AUSN

Several members of the Social Ethics Society have actively participated in the International Public Health and Bioethics Conference (virtual) hosted by the Eubios Ethics Institute and the American University of Sovereign Nations. These include Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr., Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, Fr. Dexter Veloso, Dr. Al Quillope, Dr. Sherlito Sable, Mr. Aldrin Quintero, Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Dr. Randy Teody, and Mr. Gerry Arambala. Dr. Moises Torrentira of the University of Southeastern Philippines will be presenting his paper in the 11th IPHA. "The IPHA gives SES members international exposure and the opportunity to engage with foreign scholars in an open atmosphere of real dialogue," says Dr. Maboloc, SES co-founder, who is a visiting professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations.

Gerry Arambala to present seminal research on the relationship between CA and genetics

Gerry Arambala, chair of philosophy at La Salle University in Ozamiz, will present his seminal research on the relationship between the Capability Approach and genetic engineering in the first SES Hybrid conference this October 26, 2020. The virtual event will be attended by 83 SES members nationwide. Arambala has previously published a paper on the subject matter in the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics.

Radical Democracy Research in Mindanao: A Report

On September 2018, the Ateneo de Davao University, through its University Research Council, awarded a research grant to Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, for his study on "Radical Democracy in the Philippines." Dr. Maboloc has since published five papers here and abroad while three papers are forthcoming. Five other young researchers have also published outstanding papers on President Duterte's radical politics.  The purpose of the study was to provide an alternative narrative to the usually dominant voice of Manila scholars in assessing the politics of the 16th president of the Philippines. Dr. Maboloc has also delivered the paper "Post-Colonial Politics and the Grammar of Dissent: Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte" at Nagoya University in Japan. 11th SES Conference to be held as a Hybrid event

The 11th Annual Social Ethics Society will be conducted as a hybrid event (online and in-person) this coming October 26, 2020. It will be held at the San Isidro Parish Hall in the scenic Marilog District, Davao City. IATF-DOH-LGU protocols will be observed. The hybrid conference will consist of a physical event of 10-15 people and an online link via Zoom. The event is hosted by Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES BOD chair. The SES will also hold the election of officers on the said day.

SES encourages members to join in AUSN International Public Health Conference

The members of the Social Ethics Society are encouraged to participate in the International Public Health Conference (Virtual) hosted by Dr. Darryl Macer of the American University of Sovereign Nations. The 10th edition will be held this coming October 1-3  2020, 6AM Los Angeles, USA time. (9pm PH time). The conference is a venue for academicians, health experts and scholars alike to exchange ideas on the most recent public health emergency. Dr. Roger Bayod publishes paper in International book

Dr. Roger Bayod is a co-author of the paper "Lifestyle is the medicine for a healthy human society" in the book The 2020 Pandemic and Social Science, edited by Dr. Jahid Siraz, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

SES to launch Covid-19 Research Project

The Social Ethics Society will launch its Covid-19 Philosophical Research Project. This initiative seeks to document the research output (papers, articles, conference presentations) of its select members. The goal of the research is to examine the social, political, and philosophical implications of the pandemic. The researchers involved in this project are Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc (AdDU), Fr. Dexter Veloso (St. Francis Xavier Seminary), Dr. Rogelio Bayod (Cor Jesu), Mr. Aldrin Quintero (NDMU), and Mr. Gerry Arambala (LSU). The SES recognizes the support of Dr. Darryl Macer of the Eubios Ethics Institute to the members of the SES in the dissemination of their researches.

  The Social Ethics Society is grateful to the American University of Sovereign Nations for the enormous opportunity it has given to the society's members, two of whom are currently enrolled in the doctoral program, namely Fr. Dexter Veloso and Mr. Aldrin Quintero. Dr. Rogelio Bayod, who recently graduated at AUSN, and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, are now part of the roster of its visiting professors. Dr. Bayod focuses on development and IP issues while Dr. Maboloc works on global justice. The AUSN is based in Arizona, USA and offers various graduate programs in bioethics, sustainability and global public health.

Prof. Arambala's Study on Amartya Sen included in Ethics in Contemporary Philippine Society

Prof. Gerry Arambala's paper "Capability Approach and Human Development" is included in the book Ethics in Contemporary Philippine Society, which was published recently. Edited by Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, the book includes articles written by Karl Gaspar, Darryl Macer, Benjiemen Labastin, Ruby Suazo, and Daniel Mishori. Prof. Arambala's work on Amartya Sen has been published also in the Asian Journal of Comparative Politics where he examines the relation between genetics and the CA. Meanwhile, the book on ethics is now the textbook used by a select group of professors at Ateneo de Davao University, Notre Dame of Marbel University, La Salle University, Cor Jesu College, and Cebu Technological University, among others.

Dr. Rogelio Bayod is Visiting Professor at AUSN

Dr. Rogelio Bayod has been invited to be a Visiting Professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN). Dr. Darryl Macer extended the invitation to Dr. Bayod, who will focus in the area of Indigenous Ethics. Dr. Bayod has a degree in Development from the University of Southeastern Philippines. He has also recently finished another doctoral degree from AUSN. He has published papers here and abroad. His work on recognitive justice has been included in the book Ethics in Contemporary Philippine Society.

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is Visiting Professor at American University of Sovereign Nations

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc has been invited by Dr. Darryl Macer, AUSN President, to be a Visiting Professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations, which is based in Arizona, USA. He will be working in the field of Global Justice. Dr. Maboloc has a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of San Carlos, maxima cum laude. He holds a joint masters in Applied Ethics from Linköping University in Sweden and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He also finished a master's in philosophy at Ateneo de Manila University. He graduated AB Philosophy, cum laude, at Ateneo de Davao University. Dr. Maboloc is the co-editor of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy and is an associate professor at Ateneo de Davao University. He has published 42 academic papers here and abroad. SES Journal of Applied Philosophy releases Special Issue on Covid-19

The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy has released a Special Issue on Covid-19. The volume has 15 articles. Four (4) are written by international scholars and 11 by local scholars. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is the editor for this special issue. The objective of the journal is to gather scholars from various fields of expertise to reflect on the Covid-19 pandemic. 3rd International Public Health Conference (Virtual) set for April 30

The third International Public Health Ambassador Conference (Virtual) will be held on April 30, 2020 and hosted by the American University of Sovereign Nations in Arizona, USA. Members of the Social Ethics Society will join health experts from Japan, the US, Italy, the UK, and Iran, among others, in discussing various aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Aldrin Quintero of Notre Dame of Marbel, Dr. Randy Tudy and Dr. Roger Bayod of Cor Jesu College, Mr. Gerry Arambala of La Salle Ozamiz, and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao will present research papers on the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference is organized by Dr. Darryl Macer, AUSN president.

2nd International Public Health Ambassador (Virtual) Conference set

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo, Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College, and Gerry Arambala of La Salle University in Ozamiz, three active members of the Social Ethics Society, will be joining the 2nd International Public Health Conference hosted by the American University of Sovereign Nations in Arizona, USA, April 9, 2020 (9PM Philippine time). Dr. Maboloc will present a paper on pandemics and cognitive disability, Dr. Bayod will analyze the relation between distributive and recognitive justice, and Mr. Arambala will tackle Ozamiz politics, all under the purview of the Covid-19 global crisis. The event gathers ethics professors and public health experts around the world to discuss the Covid-19 pandemic. The first segment of the virtual conference had 20 presentations and 50 partipants worldwide. Dr. Darryl Macer, President of AUSN, is the organizer.
