Christopher Ryan Maboloc: Visiting Scholar at Lanzhou University

In July 2026, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, an Associate Professor from Ateneo de Davao University and one of the Philippines' top philosophy researchers, served as a Visiting Scholar at the prestigious Lanzhou University in Gansu Province, China. His academic exchange, funded by Lanzhou University, was marked by key lectures, policy study, and collaborative engagements.

Dr. Maboloc delivered a major lecture to an audience of faculty members, graduate students, and representatives from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He argued that true leadership is fundamentally about serving the people and meeting the expectations of citizens. He noted that China's governance system stands as a practical example of a social governance model that successfully integrates classical Confucian principles and ideals.

Following his lecture, Dr. Maboloc collaborated with Lanzhou University's academic community to study modern technological tools in public administration: He was briefed by Assoc. Prof. Zhao Yanhai on how Lanzhou University utilizes advancements in big data science. They discussed how these data-driven tools are applied directly to decision theory to enhance the precision and effectiveness of governmental decision-making.

Dr. Maboloc's exchange extended beyond the classroom to include practical, on-site immersions into local governance in the Chengguan District Comprehensive Social Governance Center. While in Lanzhou, he visited this municipal center and met with its head, Director Ju Yafang. He observed firsthand how the district streamlines administrative issues- such as land disputes, tax problems, and emergency services—into a single hub so citizens do not have to navigate multiple departments.

Accompanied by CASS members from Lanzhou, he later traveled to Beijing to study the broader philosophy of China's "people-centered, high-quality development". This study focused on how the state balances rapid economic growth and AI integration with social harmony and equitable wealth distribution.

Towards the end of the Academic Exchange, Dr. Maboloc embarked on a trip to Shanghai via the bullet train to visit the Memorial Hall of the First Communist Party Congress. He toured the massive new  pavilion and exhibit center that featured 120,000 documents and artifacts related to the founding of the party and the growth and progress of China.
