Social Ethics Society

The Social Ethics Society and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines through its Center for Philosophy and Humanities will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the conduct of research and publication in three areas, namely Artificial Intelligence, Indigenous Cultures, and Political Philosophy. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon has been designated by the SES Board to lead the team. SES members tapped for the research projects include Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Mr. Menelito Mansueto, Mr. Oliver Perater, Dr. Randy Tudy, Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera, among others. Prof. Agnes Sunga met with the SES Board to finalize the MOU last February 6, 2025 in Davao City. 

  Dr. Rogelio Bayod of North Valley College, the Vice President of the Social Ethics Society, will deliver a paper in the Plenary of the 4th Union of Societies and Associations of Philosophy in the Philippines (USAPP) Summit this coming June 4-6, 2025 at the Bohol Island State University in Tagbilaran City. Fr. Dexter Veloso, President of the SES, has given the imprimatur to Dr. Bayod to represent the SES. Dr. Bayod has written extensively on Indigenous Rights and Environmental Preservation. A well cited author, he has a doctorate in Global Justice and Sustainability from the American University of Sovereign Nations where he is also a Visiting Professor. Dr. Bayod has tirelessly worked for the advancement of Philosophy in Mindanao and has invited into Cor Jesu College, the Holy Cross of Davao College, and North Valley College international scholars such as Dr. Darryl Macer, Dr. Wataru Kusaka, Dr. Daniel Mishori, and Dr. Juichiro Tanabe. 

  The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy invites manuscript submissions for its Volume 10. Papers on Philosophy and Ethics, Philippine Democracy, Human Rights and Peace Studies, Culture and Society, the Philosophy of Technology, among others, are welcome. Papers should be around 5,000 to 6,000 words and must use the Chicago Manual of Style. Papers presented during the most recent SES conferences are likewise encouraged. All papers will undergo a double blind review. Please send your manuscript to the Managing Editor, Menelito Mansueto via Email: migs_mansueto@yahoo.com on or before May 31, 2025.

This is typical of what I call the radical shift in philosophizing, which has created spaces for Philosophy away from the dominant centers of learning in Manila. In fact, these scholars have shaped thinking in the region and elsewhere.  1. Fr. Michael Moga, SJ is instrumental in establishing and developing philosophy programs across the three Ateneo schools in Mindanao, Fr. Moga's influence is evident through his extensive publications and the academic traditions he fostered in the region. He wrote on Heidegger, Husserl, the Philosophy of Religion, and Phenomenology.  2. Dr. Renante Pilapil is the current dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of the Ateneo de Davao University.   The Social Ethics Society will ink a Memorandum of Understanding with Bohol Island State University (BISU) on a partnership for the conduct of the Sustainability Conference that will be held later this year in Bohol. This was revealed by Francis Jeus Ibañez during the 15th SES Conference. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc represented the SES in a meeting attended by BISU Research officials and department level heads last February 4, 2025. The SES will provide technical support and expert speakers for the event. A Call for Papers is forthcoming according to Mr. Ibañez. 

  Menelito Mansueto’s book, Decolonial Turn in the Philippine South was launched February 7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. The young professor at MSU-IIT delivered a short talk explaining the motivation and influence on his work, primarily Enrique Dussel. The other aspects of Decolonial writing that he mentioned includes the works of Dr. Romulo Bautista, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, Bro. Karl Gaspar and Dr. Rogelio Bayod. The book consists of five chapters and discusses the concepts pertaining to our colonial history and the critical mindset needed to overcome its effects. 

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc's The Question of Justice in Contemporary Liberal Theory was launched February 7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. The book, published by Elzystyle Publishing, consists of ten chapters. It provides a comprehensive view of Rawlsian liberalism and the many reactions to it, including insights on Iris Marion Young, Michael Sandel, Amartya Sen, Robert Nozick, and Will Kymlicka. John Weckert of Charles Sturt University wrote the Foreword of the book.

  The Social Ethics Society and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Institute of Research will ink a Memorandum of Understanding on research collaboration. This was revealed during a meeting with Professor Agnes Sunga of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon will lead the team from the Social Ethics Society. The areas of research include Artificial Intelligence, Indigenous Wisdom, and Political Philosophy.
