CRB Maboloc is Plenary Speaker in UPLB Philosophy Conference

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc has been invited as Plenary Speaker in the University of the Philippines Los Baños Philosophy Conference. Dr. Maboloc will present his paper on Biopolitics and Vaccine Nationalism. The event, "Heliaia", is organized by the Philosophical Society of UPLB. It will be held on the 22nd of May 2021 vià Zoom. Dr. Maboloc is a faculty at Ateneo de Davao University and a Visiting Professor at the American University of Sovereign Nations. He is part of the WeCope Committee on Covid‐19 of the Eubios Ethics Institute. He is the author of 50+ indexed papers, including a dozen indexed by Scopus, and has delivered 50+ lectures in conferences here and abroad.

USEP-SES Research and Publication Writeshop

The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy and the University of Southeastern Philippines will jointly host a Research and Publication Writeshop for Philosophy and the Social Sciences this coming May 6 & 7, 2021 at Eden Nature Park in Davao City. The hybrid event (in-person and online) will be participated in by college teachers, researchers and graduate students. The speakers are Prof. Jovito Anito Jr., Dr. Moises Torrentira, and Dr. Randy Tudy for Education and the Social Sciences, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc for Philosophy and Bioethics, and Pastor Samuel Cho (Mind Education and Oriental Philosophy). Dr. Rogelio Bayod to present environment paper in 16th IPHA

  Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College will present his latest paper on the environment entitled "Harmonization of Modern Technology and Indigenous Knowledge Systems in Environmental Education" in the 16th International Public Health Conference to be held on April 22-25, 2021. It is a virtual event hosted by the American University of Sovereign Nations (AUSN). Dr. Bayod, who is a graduate of AUSN, is making headways in IP research, a field in which wide social discourse is present. The conference will be attended by experts on ethics and public health from different countries.

Weldon Sacro & Gerry Arambala to present paper in International Conference

Weldon Sacro and Gerry Arambala, both from La Salle University Ozamiz, will present their research papers in the 16th International Public Health Conference hosted by the American University of Sovereign Nations. The virtual event will be participated in by scholars from Italy, Japan, the US, Malaysia, Turkey, India, and New Zealand, including the Philippines. It will be held from April 22 to 25, 2021. Sacro will discuss the response of the Philippine government to the crisis while Arambala will talk about his reflections on Martin Heidegger and life during the pandemic. The online conference provides the participants the opportunity to engage with experts and learn insights about the different approaches and ethical strategies in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic.

NDMU & SES host successful Ethics of Technology Lectures

The Notre Dame of Marbel University and the Social Ethics Society successfully hosted the Lectures on the Ethics of Technology last April 17, 2021, with philosopher John Weckert and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc as speakers. The event is part of the SES Webinar Series which is meant to bring global scholars into Mindanao through the online platform. Dr. Weckert talked about technological optimism and what he believes is the alternative direction that societies must take. Not much attention has been paid to ethics, he said. Meanwhile, Dr. Maboloc discussed how large tech firms are taking over the role of censorship which he argues should solely belong to the state. More than 180 participants joined the virtual event. Dr. Al Quillope of NDMU facilitated the hosting by NDMU. Dr. Juvy Reyes and Mr. Aldrin Quintero introduced the speakers, respectively. The next Webinar Series 4 will be held on May 13, 2021. John Weckert: Technology - Are we going in the right direction? (SES Webinar Series 3)

Technology: Are we going in the right direction? Dr. John Weckert, Charles Sturt University This talk will focus on four aspects of technology: technological optimism, the technological fix, the technological treadmill and the technological imperative. I will argue that we are overly optimistic about technology and this causes an overreliance on technology to fix problems, which in turn leads to the necessity of even more technology, the treadmill. This state of affairs gives us reason to consider carefully our development and use of technology and whether we are headed in the right direction. Using nanotechnology as an example, I will suggest that there are good grounds of reassessing the way we look at technology. Perhaps we need a new technological imperative.
