Highlights of SES Activities in 2022

1. Testimonial Dinner for Dr. Darryl Macer, president of AUSN, at Balai Torrentira Cafe. The event, organized by Fr. Dexter Veloso and Dr. Roger Bayod, was attended by all SES officers. The SES has developed various local and international linkages in the pursuit of its mission to help young researchers and develop local scholars.  2. The 4th Philippine Politics and Culture Conference (online). The keynote speaker was Dr. Jeffry Ocay of the Eastern Visayas State University. A total of 24 research papers were presented. The first PPCC was held at Nagoya University in Japan and was organized by Dr. Wataru Kusaka.  3. ICRES Conference. Prof. Cathy Toquero, organizer, and Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president, signed a MOU for this event which was organized jointly. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc was one of the plenary speakers. MSU Marawi Philosophy Department holds Ethics for Nature Seminar

The Philosophy Department of Mindanao State University in Marawi held its 3rd Ethics for Nature Seminar. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc gave the keynote lecture. He discussed the postmodern approach to the philosophy of ecology to an audience of a thousand MSU students. Prof. Efren Oledan and Atty. Aurora Racmat also delivered lectures during the event. MSU-IIT faculty members and Dr. Rogelio Bayod, who is the lead writer of a paper concerning the narratives of locals in post-conflict Marawi City, attended the seminar. Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera, assistant dean of the college, introduced the main guest. The group proceeded to ground zero, the center of conflict during the Marawi Siege in 2017. While the war-torn buildings remain, actual progress in the reconstruction effort is observable onsite. SES joins USERN Congress, CRB Maboloc is Plenary Speaker

Dr. Ian Clark Parcon leads other members of the Social Ethics Society in joining the 7th Universal Science Education Research Network (USERN) Hybrid Conference that will start today, November 8 until November 12, 2022.  The participants from the SES are Dr. Parcon (AdDU), Dr. Rogelio Bayod (CJC)  Mr. Gerry Arambala (MSU Gen-San), Mr. Menelito Mansueto (MSU-IIT), and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc (AdDU). USERN extended the invitation to the aforementioned. Dr. Maboloc, a member of USERN, is one of the speakers in the annual event. His paper is "The role of indigenous wisdom in scientific revolutions." The researcher argues that science belongs to every culture through the perspective of traditional knowledge. The USERN Congress includes talks by Nobel laureates and the top 1% scientists across the globe in the field of chemistry, medicine, physics, and the social sciences. The Social Ethics Society: Mindanao's Premier Philosophical Association

The Social Ethics Society focuses in giving the young and dynamic ethics & philosophy faculty in Mindanao and the rest of the country the opportunity to present their research outputs in a scholarly engagement while at the same time bringing in top and seasoned scholars, both local and international, to collaborate with its members in a communal spirit anchored on friendship, openness, and a firm commitment to social justice, human dignity, and equality. The SES has invited as speakers during its annual conferences, including the online platform, high caliber scholars like John Weckert (Charles Sturt University), Darryl Macer (AUSN), Wataru Kusaka (Nagoya University), Daniel Mishori (Tel Aviv University), Asuna Yoshizawa (Kyoto University), Goran Collste (Linkoping University), Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn University), and Juichiro Tanabe (Waseda University). The Social Ethics Society has inducted more members into the organization. The new members include Dr. Narcisa Ramos Canilao of UP Baguio, Atty. Carlos Canilao, a human rights lawyer, Fr. Costan Fatlolon, who took his doctorate at Ateneo de Manila University, Prof. Cathy Mae Toquero, a topnotch higher education scholar, and Ms. Diane Ulanday of MSU General Santos, Mr. Christian Hipolao of LSU Ozamiz, Allyson Cruyff Ladero of Silliman, Prof. Leah Tabile of Centro Escolar University, and Danilo Agustin of Ateneo de Davao University.  Others inducted into the SES include Prof. Mark Lataza and Prof. Ben Villareal of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig, Dr. Rodel Ponferrada and Prof. Sherwin Españo of EVSU, Prof. Ma. 13th SES Conference held

The 13th Social Ethics Society Conference was successfully held last October 27-28, 2022 at Holiday Ocean View Resort in Samal Island. Thirty papers were delivered in the event, highlighted of course by the keynote address of Dr. Goran Collste from Sweden and the plenary talks of Dr. Rec Eguia on Futures Thinking, Fr. John Guo Wang on Environmental Sustainability, and Prof. Cathy Mae Toquero, who talked about Education in the 21st Century. The theme was "Weaving Multidisciplinary Perspectives." The topnotch academics who attended the event include Dr. Narcisa Ramos Canilao of UP Baguio, Dr. Ranilo Hermida of AdMU, Dr. Al Quillope of NDMU, and Prof. Bernardo Caslib Jr. of UP Manila. Vice Mayor Leonigildo Calibara and Councilor Bartolome Lataza Jr., together with Prof. Mark Lataza, shared the peace journey of Alamada, North Cotabato. MSU-IIT at the Frontier of Philosophy in Mindanao: The Pioneering Batch

By Menelito Mansueto (with information from MSU-IIT Department of Philosophy and Humanities Faculty)  The Department of Philosophy and Humanities of MSU-IIT is blessed with 42 graduates this year 2022, the department’s pioneering batch.  To start the new academic year this August, the department had its students’ orientation to welcome the young aspirants and discuss matters related to the face-to-face class implementation after the pandemic. Currently, 151 students, from the first to the fourth year, are enrolled in the program—Bachelor of Science in Philosophy, Major in Applied Ethics, in line with MSU-IIT’s academic and research thrust, which is geared toward technology and science.  Under Prof. Fernando V. Garingo, the department plans to offer the degree—Master of Science in Applied Ethics in the coming years. Education is the key to sustaining peace and progress. This was the message of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian in his Inspirational Address at the recently concluded International Ethics and Peace Education Conference held at Urdaneta City University. Commissioner Dr. Ronald Adamat of CHED also delivered an inspiring message in the plenary. Dr. Darry Macer, president of the American University of Sovereign Nations, gave the Keynote Address. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of AdDU and Dr. Jove Jim Aguas of UST delivered plenary lectures. Mr. Man Hee Lee of the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, and Restoration of Light (HWPL) also gave his inspirational message to the participants in the hybrid event while M/Gen. Ethics: A Flourishing Life by Dr. Gleemoore Makie

Ethics, A Flourishing Life, by Gleemoore Makie, PhD, provides students with the necessary steps in understanding the theories, principles, and issues to understand the role of moral reasoning in their lives. Written with great zeal, the text begins with the meaning of moral agency and proceeds with care to explain the theories and issues. Students will also be asked to give their insights on the poems with social and moral themes written by the author. Dr. Makie first taught philosophy at Saint Louis University in Baguio City. He had a 12 year teaching stint at the Philippine Military Academy. He is now a faculty member of the Urdaneta City University handling ethics and general philosophy. Dr. Makie's research interests include IP Research, Indigenous Music, and Military Ethics. Dr. Makie is a member of the Philosophical Association of Northern Luzon. 

Dr. Ryan Urbano is the 2nd Most Published member of the SES

  Dr. Ryan Urbano, who is now an Associate Professor at the Cebu Technological University, is the second Most Published member of the Social Ethics Society, based on data obtained from Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Dr. Urbano has 30 articles to his credit with 50 citations. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University topped the latest list, with 67 papers published and 172 citations. Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College comes at 3rd with 29 publications and 62 citations. Dr. Jeffry Ocay, a professor at the Eastern Visayas State University, is fourth. He has a total of 20 articles and 122 citations. In fifth place is Dr. Raymundo Pavo of UP Mindanao  He has published 16 articles with 24 citations. 

Prof. Göran Collste to keynote 13th SES Conference

  Swedish philosopher Göran Collste, professor emeritus at Linköping University in Sweden, will be the Keynote Speaker in the 13th Social Ethics Society Conference. Professor Collste is the author of the book Global Rectificatory Justice (Palgrave Macmillan). He will talk about multidisciplinary research in relation to applied ethics. The event will be held from October 27-28, 2022 at Holiday Ocean View Resort in Samal. The theme of the SES Conference is "Weaving Multidisciplinary Research." The plenary speakers are Ms. Cathy Mae Toquero (MSU-GenSan), Dr. Rec Eguia (USEP-CDM), Fr. John Guo (Society of Mary), and Dean Marcos Monderin Jr. (USM).  Papers in philosophy, ethics, the social sciences, politics and governance, development theory and education are welcome. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon is appointed as Chief Editor of the SES Journal

  On the basis of a Board Resolution passed on July 23, 2022, Dr. Ian Clark Parcon has been appointed as Chief Editor of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy. The Board, headed by Fr. Dexter Veloso, also unanimously moved for the reorganization of the editorial board. The journal will now have two areas of concentration - First, General Philosophy & Applied Ethics and second, Development Theory and Governance.  Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc will return as an editor. He and Dr. Peter Elicor are co-editors for General Philosophy and Applied Ethics while Dr. Rogelio Bayod and Dr. Randy Tudy will be co-editors for Development Theory and Governance. New submissions to the journal may be sent to icrparcon@addu.edu.ph. The SES Journal of Applied Philosophy is a peer-reviewed journal listed in the Asean Citation Index.

Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte officially launched

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc's book Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte was launched last July 23, 2022 at Balai Torrentira Cafe. The author shared his personal experiences and struggles as a scholar. The event, hosted by Fr. Dexter Veloso, president of the Social Ethics Society, was attended by people in the academe, government, and civil society.  Among those in attendance were Dr. Rec Eguia of USEP-CDM, Dean Marcos Monderin of USM, Atty. Dennis Navarro (DENR-EMB), Fr.John Guo of the Society of Mary, Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr., past dean at St. Francis Xavier Seminary, Dr. Randy Tudy (CHED), Dr. Ian Parcon (AdDU), Ms  Janua Cunanan (AdDU), Atty. Mice Fernandez, Atty. Julius Salarza, and Atty. Jamil Matalam (Assistant Dean, USEP College of Law). 13th Social Ethics Society Conference

The 13th Social Ethics Society Conference will be held this coming October 27-28, 2022 at the Island Garden City of Samal. It will be hosted by Mindanao State University - General Santos City and the University of Southern Mindanao. The conference will be chaired by Dr. Ian Clark Parcon. Fr. Dexter Veloso is the Over-all chair of the undertaking. The Call for Papers will be released soon. The event is in-person. The theme of the international Conference is multidisciplinary. Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte to be launched on July 23, author meets Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte

  Fr. Dexter Veloso, president of the Social Ethics Society, will sponsor the Book Launching of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc's Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte this coming July 23, 2022, 9AM at Balai Torrentira Cafe in Los Amigos, Davao City. Meanwhile, Dr. Maboloc met with Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte last July 13 at Davao City Hall. The author presented a copy of the book to the local chief executive. He was accompanied by his wife Ms. Marietta Maboloc and top caterer Raymond Zapanta. Dr. Maboloc and the Mayor talked about the legacy of  former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Asia Institute in Tokyo to host Radical Democracy in the Philippines Discussion

  The Asia Institute in Tokyo is hosting a Discussion on Radical Politics in the Philippines this coming July 6, 2022 at 3PM. The speakers are Benjiemen Labastin (LSU), Ruben Balotol (VSU), Menelito Mansueto (MSU-IIT), and Gerry Arambala (LSU). Books published by members of the SES through its Book Publication Project

  Part of the mandate of the SES is to develop local scholarship and advance the growth of its members. In a strategic planning held in March last year, the Board envisaged the publication of books by its members. With the help of international scholars who did the reviews, three titles have been published through KDP Amazon International.

Covid-19 Philosophical Research book to be released

The book Covid-19 Philosophical Research is a compilation of the published papers of eight Social Ethics Society members on the Covid-19 Pandemic. The book reflects about the ethical, social, and political ramifications of the public health emergency. Radical Politics in the Philippines - A Reader

  Radical Politics in the Philippines - A Reader has been released. The volume is authored by Benjiemen Labastin and Gerry Arambala of La Salle University in Ozamiz, Menelito Mansueto of MSU-IIT, Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu College, and Ruben Balotol of Visayas State University. The book contains the published essays of the scholars on the topic radical politics. According Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, who wrote the introduction, these essays are a testament to a critical period in Philippine history. They serve as a voice to an underrepresented narrative in our society.
