Highlights of SES Activities in 2022


1. Testimonial Dinner for Dr. Darryl Macer, president of AUSN, at Balai Torrentira Cafe. The event, organized by Fr. Dexter Veloso and Dr. Roger Bayod, was attended by all SES officers. The SES has developed various local and international linkages in the pursuit of its mission to help young researchers and develop local scholars. 

2. The 4th Philippine Politics and Culture Conference (online). The keynote speaker was Dr. Jeffry Ocay of the Eastern Visayas State University. A total of 24 research papers were presented. The first PPCC was held at Nagoya University in Japan and was organized by Dr. Wataru Kusaka. 

3. ICRES Conference. Prof. Cathy Toquero, organizer, and Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president, signed a MOU for this event which was organized jointly. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc was one of the plenary speakers. Relevant research papers on Philippine education and educational resources design & development were presented in the conference. 

4. Publication of three books by several SES members, namely Radical Politics in Ozamiz by G. Arambala; Radical Politics in the Philippines by R. Bayod, R. Balotol, M. Mansueto, B. Labastin, and G. Arambala; and Covid-19 Philosophical Research by A. Rennesland, et al. The books were released by Kindle Publishing via Amazon International.

5. International Peace Education Conference. The event was hosted by the University of Pangasinan and organized by Mr. Mark Anthony Lataza. Dr. Maboloc as well as Dr. Darryl Macer were keynote speakers. Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian graced the event, which was co-sponsored by HWPL.

6. Seminar on Writing and Publishing (online) . The event was organized and funded by the University of Southeastern Philippines and was co-sponsored by the SES. Dr. Rey Pilapil and Dr. Ian Clark Parcon were the resource persons. It was attended by philosophy and ethics teachers in the region. 

7. Democracy in Asia Series. An online forum oeganized by the Asia Institute in Tokyo and convened by Dr. Layne Hartsell. Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera of MSU - Marawi co-hosted the event. Dean Benjiemen Labastin, Mr. Migs Mansueto, Mr. Ruben Balotol, and Mr. Gerry Arambala were the resource persons.

8. The 13th SES Conference. Dr. Goran Collste of Linkoping University was the keynote speaker. The in-person event, the first since the pandemic, was held at the Ocean View Resort in Samal Island. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon was the head organizer for the event which was attended by 70 participants across the country. A total of 21 research papers were presented, highlighted by the presentation of the peace initiative in the Municipality of Alamada by its LGU officials. 

9. The Politics and Culture, Special Issue, of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy was released. A total of 15 articles were selected and published. The special issue was edited by Dr Christopher Ryan Maboloc, his third for the SES Journal. Previously, he edited a special issue on the Duterte Presidency and another on the Covid-19 Pandemic.

10. Collaboration between the SES and the Philosophy Department of MSU in Marawi on a host of activities, including research and book writing for the Bangsamoro ethics curriculum. MSU faculty members are currently working with Dr. Roger Bayod on a paper documenting the narratives of survival and resiliency of the Maranaos during the Marawi siege. Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera is the lead person for this undertaking.

Thomas Pogge to mentor AdDU prof in ASAP Global Justice Fellowship at Yale

Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University will be the mentor of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc in the ASAP Global Justice Program Fellowship at Yale University. Prof. Pogge is the author of World Poverty and Human Rights. Dr. Maboloc will write his research on structural issues in Muslim Mindanao using the perspectives of Iris Marion Young and Thomas Pogge.  ASAP is an acronym for Academics Stand Against Poverty. According to its website, it utilizes "scholarship to influence policy and public attitudes to poverty. Established in 2010, (ASAP) is a non-partisan, independent global organization aiming to eradicate severe poverty worldwide." It is based in New Haven, Connecticut. It is under the Global Justice Program at Yale.  Fourteen scholars around the world were chosen for the ASAP Program. Pogge is the most prominent scholar on global justice. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc just published his 90th Philosophy Paper

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of the Philosophy Department of Ateneo de Davao University has published his 90th philosophy paper. He co-authored an article entitled "An Ethics of Justice for the Elderly: Ageism and the Covid-19 Pandemic" with Dr. Anesito Cutillas of Cebu Technological University. The study was published in Community Health Equity Research and Policy, a Sage journal indexed by Clarivate Analytics and Scopus.  He has published papers under Springer, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Philosophy Documentation Center, and Sage.
