Social Ethics Society

The Commission on Higher Education has endorsed participation to the 6th Social Ethics Society Conference this coming October 27-28, 2016 at Secdea Beach Resort, Samal Island. The theme of the conference is " Technology, Education, and Governance: Prospects and Perspectives. "  The plenary speakers are Dr. Orlando Ali Mandane Jr. of the University of San Carlos, Prof. Ferdinand Mangibin of Silliman University and Prof. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University. A total of 15 papers have been approved for presentation.

The 6th Social Ethics Society Conference this coming October 27-28, 2016 at Secdea Resort in Samal Island will have the following as plenary speakers: Dr. Orlando Ali Mandane of the University of San Carlos, Prof. Ferdinand Mangibin of Silliman University, and Prof. Christopher Ryan Maboloc of Ateneo de Davao University. Fr. Dexter Veloso of the St. Francis Xavier College Seminary will be the host and Conference Chair. Peter Paul Elicor heads the secretariat and a panel that has been constituted by the Board of Directors will form the scientific committee. 

       For purposes of consideration of papers for presentation, please submit through email an abstract of not more than 300 words to Peter Paul Elicor at peterelicor@gmail.com not later than August 15, 2016 .  The theme for this year's conference is “Technology, Education, and Governance: Prospects and Perspectives.”  Attach a separate title page that includes the paper’s title, the author’s name, institutional affiliation, and email address.  Abstracts will be reviewed blindly by a scientific committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email. Full papers should not exceed 5,000 words.  Papers may discuss contemporary theories of education, prospects and perspectives in the reform of Philippine education, modern technology and its influence to culture and society, theories and perspectives in democratic equality, governance and citizenship, including global justice issues.

Mr. Agus Majid, the consul for immigration of the Indonesian Consulate based in Davao City, presented a paper analyzing the impact of neo-liberalism on migration policy during the 5th Social Ethics Society Conference held at Pearl Farm Resort in Samal Island, Davao. In his paper, he mentioned that "government intervention in regulating people movement is important" in today's age of the mass movement of peoples. This will require, according to him, understanding "new welfare and labor market systems." As such, he said that the challenge of governments these days is "to manage markets, not to strive vainly to shut it down," citing an article from The Economist . When asked about the concerns of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWS), Consul Majid said that "immigration policy should be multilateral rather than unilateral," and that governments must have a holistic framework, instead of having a "purely economic or rationalist approach...

The 5th Social Ethics Society Conference was successfully held at Pearl Farm Resort in Samal Island, Davao, last October 30-31, 2015. Fr. Dexter Veloso, SES president, during his Inspirational Message, highlighted the important work of the organization and its role in developing philosophical reflection in the region. He encouraged all participants to sustain their crucial work in order to better serve Philippine society. Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr., the dean of studies of the St. Francis Xavier College Seminary, which hosted the annual event, opened the conference that was attended by philosophy teachers, researchers, and scholars from the Visayas and Mindanao, inviting those in attendance to reflect on the spectacle of the dehumanization of work.  The plenary speakers for this year are Dr. Jeffry Ocay of Silliman University, Dr. Ryan Urbano and Dr. Ruby Suazo of the University of San Carlos.
