Dr. Jeffry Ocay is Keynote Speaker in Radical Democracy in the Philippines Conference

Dr. Jeffry Ocay, professor of Philosophy at the Eastern Visayas State University, will be the Keynote Speaker in the 4th Philippine Politics and Culture Conference this coming April 22, 2022. The theme of the event is "Radical Politics and the Future of Philippine Democracy." Other confirmed speakers include Dr. Juichiro Tanabe (Kumamoto and Waseda University), Ms. Asuna Yoshizawa (Kyoto University), Dr. Rey Luis Montesclaros (MSU-IIT), PD Bruce Colao (Department of the Interior and Local Government), and Prof. Ian Clark Parcon (Ateneo de Davao University).

Politics in the Philippines, explains Wataru Kusaka (2017) and Benjiemen Labastin (2018), is rooted in contestation. Radical democracy, a post-modern approach to understanding politics, looks beyond consensus and recognizes the agonistic nature of modern democracy. While it sets aside the moral aspect of the politics of Liberalism, it is cognizant nevertheless of the fact that a political order can be achieved by acknowleding various differences in the polity.

The first Philippine Politics and Culture Conference was held at Nagoya University in Japan in 2018. It was organized by Dr. Wataru Kusaka and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, whose research on radical democracy in the Philippines was presented in the same conference. The second conference was arranged by Cor Jesu College with Dr. Kusaka as Guest speaker while the 3rd was hosted by La Salle University - Ozamiz.

The 4th installment is co-sponsored by the Social Ethics Society and Cor Jesu College. It will also be synchronized as the 3rd installment of The Future of Philippine Democracy Webinar Series that serves to educate voters on the forthcoming National Elections. The online event will be hosted by Dr. Rogelio Bayod of Cor Jesu. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is the convenor. Limited slots for paper presentations are available. For inquiries, email the PPCC 4 Secretariat at roger.bayod@gmail.com.

Statement of the SES expressing its opposition to the proposal to remove Ethics in the GE Curriculum

We, members of the Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, express our strong opposition to the proposal to remove ethics in college. Such move is bereft of merit and is ignorant as to the value and purpose of the teaching of the course, which is thoroughly rooted in the integral and critical function of higher education. The proposal to transfer it to Senior High School deprives college students of the teaching of ethics as a professional course, which is crucial in their civic engagements and the pursuit of a democratic society that can only be grounded in responsible citizenship and critical thinking.  The direction of Edcom and its advisers from the technical panels of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reduces our whole education system into a mode of creating docile workers who will constitute the labor force that will serve the whims and interests of a capital intensive and consumer driven globalized neoliberal economic order. It only breeds our subser...
