Medical technocracy, Edith Stein highlight 5th Politics and Culture Conference

The Social Ethics Society, in partnership with Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology and Cor Jesu College in Digos, successfully held the 5th Politics and Culture Conference, via Zoom, May 5 to 6, 2023. The virtual event started with the Keynote lecture of Dr. Daniel Mishori of Tel Aviv University. He discussed the Covid-19 Pandemic, medical technocracy, and vaccines. Four other Plenary lectures were delivered - Fr. Jose Conrado Estafia (Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary), Dr. Vida Mia Valverde (AdDU), PD Bruce Colao (DILG), and Dr. Raniel Reyes (UST).

Discussions on the Covid-19 Pandemic, the concept of medical technocracy, and Edith Stein's thought on empathy highlighted the event. There were also important exchanges on the phenomenological method, Paolo Freire's radical philosophy of education, environmental ethics, the thoughts of Paul Ricoeur, the latent issue of misogyny in academia, the Philosophy of Peace, the Theory and Practice of grassroots democracy, the Politics of Recognition, social media politics, and democratic deficits in the Philippines. Prof. Migs Mansueto organized the event as Conference Chair. 

More than 20 papers were delivered during the online event, including presentations from the University of Santo Tomas, Waseda University, Tel Aviv University, Ateneo de Davao University, MSU-IIT, MSU-Marawi, Eastern Visayas State University, Visayas State University, and Cebu Normal University, among others. Dr. Roger Bayod, Dr. Ian Clark Parcon, Prof. Alvert Dalona, and Prof. Migs Mansueto took turns as moderators. Prof. Fernando Garingo gave the welcome remarks while Dr. Roger Bayod delivered an inspirational message. Fr. Banny Pardillo formally closed the event.

Statement of the SES BOD Chair

The Social Ethics Society was founded in 2010 by the late Dr. Romulo Bautista, a professor at Ateneo de Davao University who did his doctorate on Marx at the University of Madrid in Spain, and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, then a young teacher at Ateneo de Davao. The first SES Conference was held at the University of Mindanao. Its original membership was only 15, consisting mainly of the masters students of the two founders. While in the peripheries of academia, the SES pursued its goals of helping teachers in Mindanao develop their craft in ways that is consistent with philosophy as an exercise of the human will and as the highest expression of the human intellect.  When its proponents presented the concept, it was suggested that the Union of Philosophical Societies and Associations in the Philippines (USAPP) will lobby for a new bill that will professionalize philosophy in the country.
