Keynote Speakers SES-PUP International Ethics Conference at Waseda University in Tokyo

 


Professor Maji Rhee has been teaching at the School of International Liberal Studies, Waseda University since 2009. Prior to joining Waseda, Professor Rhee was a faculty member at Portland State University. Prof. Rhee received her Ed.D. from Rutgers University, LL.M. and JS.D. from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prof. Rhee has been engaged in research projects related to forensic linguistics and Legal Communications.

Dr. Ian Clark Parcon is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City, Philippines. He has an extensive involvement in gender advocacy which spans more than 20 years of giving gender related trainings to different sectors in the community and advancing gender fair policies. He also is currently active in research dealing with male involvement in feminism. He holds a doctorate degree in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University. He finished his Master of Arts degree in Applied Ethics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and Linköping University, Sweden under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship program. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy. His research interests and engagements also include multiculturalism, environmental politics, political theory, and democratic theory.

Dr. Napoleon M. Mabaquiao, Jr., is a Distinguished Full Professor at the Department of Philosophy at DLSU Manila. He has previously served as the department chair and graduate program coordinator. He taught at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, for several years before becoming a faculty member of DLSU, Manila. He was a visiting professor at Mahidol University, Thailand, in 2014. He serves as the associate editor of Philosophia: International Journal of Philosophy, a handling editor of Cognitive Processing, and an editorial consultant for Kritike. He specializes in ethics, philosophy of language, and philosophy of mind, and has published philosophical essays and books in both English and Filipino. His book Mind, Science, and Computation (foreworded by Tim Crane, 2012) was a finalist in the 2013 National Book Award, while his book, Ang Mabuting Kita: Mga Isyu ng Etika sa Negosyo (The Good Profit: Ethical Issues in Business, foreworded by Tereso Tullao, 2022), won the 2024 NAST (National Academy of Science and Technology) outstanding book award. 

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is an ASAP Global Justice Program Fellow at Yale University. He is an Associate Professor at the Ateneo de Davao University and a Visiting Lecturer at Silliman University. He finished his doctorate in philosophy at the University of San Carlos, maxima cum laude, the first ever and highest Latin honor granted by the school. He has a master's degree in Applied Ethics from Linköping University in Sweden and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway. He also holds a master's degree in philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University. He graduated AB Philosophy, cum laude, at Ateneo de Davao University. He was trained in Democracy and Governance at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Bonn and Berlin, Germany He was a delegate in the Erasmus Mundus General Assembly in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Maboloc is ranked number 1 for Philosophy in the AD World Scientific Index. A Scholarum Award nominee, he has written more than a hundred social and political commentaries in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He was awarded the Public Intellectual Prize by the Philosophical Association of the Philippines in 2020. He is the author of the book Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte.

Dr. Juichiro Tanabe is an Assistant Professor at the Center for International Education of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan and an Adjunct Lecturer at Keoi University. He was previously an Associate Professor of Kumamoto University. He was a Research Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the University of Bradford in England in the United Kingdom. His research focuses on religion, spirituality and conflict resolution. He has published articles on ‘Buddhism and Conflict Transformation’ and ‘Buddhism and Non-Violent World’ in various academic journals. He is an Associate Editor of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy and the author of the book Buddhism and the Epistemological Foundations of Conflict Resolution.

  We, members of the Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, express our strong opposition to the proposal to remove ethics in college.
