Philosophers from the South (Part 2)


8. Prof. Menelito Mansueto is probably one of the most courageous among the young scholars from the South. He is originally from Bohol and has taught at UST, FEU Diliman, BISU and now, at MSU-IIT. He juxtaposes philosophy with history and has taken the cudgels defending the interpretation of radical democracy in the works of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc.

9. Prof. Alvert Dalona is the former chairman of the Philosophy Department of MSU-IIT. The school is the only institution in the country that offers applied philosophy as a major. He is working on the Philosophy of Language for his Dissertation. He finished his MA at Ateneo de Davao University and is doing doctoral studies at Saint Louis University in Baguio City.

10. Dr. Vida Mia Valverde is the chair of the Philosophy Department at Ateneo de Davao University. She finished her MA at De La Salle University under the tutulege of Dr. Jeremiah Joaquin and her doctoral degree at Ateneo de Manila University under the supervision of Dr. Rainier Ibana. Dr. Valverde is an expert in the Philosophy of Science. Her interests include Feminism and Ethics.

11. Atty. Jamil Matalam studied Law and Economics in Europe after finishing his MA at Ateneo de Davao University. A strong advocate for Bangsamoro autonomy, he is an Associate Dean at the University of Southeastern Philippines College of Law. Atty. Matalam's interests include Ancient Greek Philosophy and Critical Theory, especially Herbert Marcuse. 

12. Dr. Peter Paul Elicor did his post graduate studies in Austria. He finished his doctorate degree at the University of Santo Tomas under the guidance of Dr. Zosimo Lee. Dr. Elicor is a well-published author and is an expert in the Philosophy for Children. He is previously connected with Ateneo de Davao University. He is the former editor of the SES Journal of Applied Philosophy. 

13. Prof. Joharel Escobia is a young and promising academic who is teaching at MSU-IIT. He is previously connected with Urios College. He took his Masters in Philosophy at Ateneo de Davao University during the time of Dr. Romulo Bautista. He is a part of a triumvirate that includes Dr. Peter Elicor and Prof. Alvert Dalona. Prof. Escobia has written and presented papers on Giorgio Agamben.

14. Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera is a Professor at Mindanao State University in Marawi. She is a peace educator and advocate. She has written and presented papers on the subject matter, using local peace narratives and indigenous paradigms to understand the problem and explore the role of inter-religious dialogue and communal values in the pursuit of peace and social justice in the context of the Bangsamoro.

Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University will be the mentor of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc in the ASAP Global Justice Program Fellowship at Yale University. Christopher Ryan Maboloc: An Intellectual Biography

By Menelito Mansueto (MSU-IIT)  Christopher Ryan Maboloc is a Davao-based Filipino scholar known for his work in Social and Political Philosophy, Bioethics, Philippine Democracy, and the Philosophy of Technology. He is an Associate Professor at Ateneo de Davao University and a Visiting Professor at Silliman University. His body of work often engages with topics of social justice, structural inequality, and political ethics, particularly in the context of the Philippines.
