Philosophers from the South (Part 3)

Prof. Al Quiloppe taught at Notre Dame of Marbel University and was the director of its Peace Institute. He was also in charge of its environmental advocacy while serving as an administrator in the school. He wrote and has delivered important papers on peace and environmental ethics. Dr. Quiloppe has degrees in philosophy and psychology.

Prof. Jose Ma. Tomacruz, who succumbed to Covid-19, was an imposing figure who was characteristic of a true fiscalizer in academia. He studied at San Jose Seminary, the University of Santo Tomas where he graduated magna cum laude, the University of Padova in Italy, the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, and Linköping University in Sweden. He wrote papers on Bioethics and was active in the field of political advocacy. 

Dr. Aldrin Quintero served as President of the Social Ethics Society from 2015-2017. He wrote papers on environmental ethics and the approach to the Covid-19 Pandemic. He has attended conferences organized by the American University of Sovereign Nations and has delivered papers in international events at Chulalongkorn University and the 22nd Asian Bioethics Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Fr. Dexter Veloso is the current President of the Social Ethics Society. He teaches philosophy and ethics at the Saint Francis Xavier Seminary and the Holy Cross of Davao College. He studied philosophy at the University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Davao University. Fr. Dexter's MA thesis was on environmental ethics. He was supervised by the renowned Dr. Rey Pilapil. Fr. Dexter has attended philosophical conferences in Japan, Bangkok and Malaysia where he delivered papers on environmental ethics.

Fr. John Guo Wang is a Chinese Catholic priest who is a member of the Society of Mary. He is the rector of the congregation in Davao City. He wrote a thesis on Amartya Sen, expanding his human development theory to include ecological capability. He was supervised by Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc. Fr. John teaches at the University of the Immaculate Concepcion. 

Fr. Urbano Pardillo Jr. served as the Dean of Studies of the Saint Francis Xavier College Seminary. He studied philosophy at the University of Navarra in Spain. An avid photographer and one of the pioneers of the Social Ethics Society, his keen interest in philosophy is wide ranging, from the Philosophy of Language to existentialist thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus. 

Prof. Benjiemen Labastin is the exemplar of the philosopher as the advocate for social justice and democracy. His MA thesis at the University of San Carlos was on deliberative democracy, specifically on Jurgen Habermas. He holds administrative positions at La Salle University in Ozamiz City. He continues to write and reflect on the state of politics in the country. 

Ms. Lucita Montojo, who passed away in 2020, was one of the most serious when it comes to the teaching of Philosophy. She did not write anything but her students and colleagues are a witness to her rigorous style. She in particular was interested in the thoughts of existentialist thinkers such as Jean Paul Sartre and Gabriel Marcel whose thoughts she actually embodied in her life.

Thomas Pogge to mentor AdDU prof in ASAP Global Justice Fellowship at Yale

Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University will be the mentor of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc in the ASAP Global Justice Program Fellowship at Yale University. Prof. Pogge is the author of World Poverty and Human Rights. Dr. Maboloc will write his research on structural issues in Muslim Mindanao using the perspectives of Iris Marion Young and Thomas Pogge.  ASAP is an acronym for Academics Stand Against Poverty.
