Fr. Dexter Veloso, the man behind the internationalization of the SES

Fr. Dexter Veloso, President of the Social Ethics Society, may be considered as a silent worker, but he is a strong force to reckon with. The leader of Mindanao's first philosophical association is the impetus of its internationalization program. Members of the SES have attended conferences abroad with the support and dedication of the good priest.

The first of these conferences is the 11th Kumamoto Bioethics Round Table in Japan in 2018. This was followed by the 2019 Gene Editing Ethics Conference at Chulalongkorn University, the 22nd Asian Bioethics Conference in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (2023) and the 23rd Asian Bioethics Conference in Bangkok, Thailand in March this year.

The latest initiative of the SES through the leadership of Fr. Dexter is the SES-PUP International Ethics Conference at Waseda University in Tokyo Japan this September. The event gathers scholars from Japan and the Philippines, including the country's top schools - UP, DLSU, UST, UPLB, PUP, and AdMU, to discuss a host of issues.

Fr. Veloso has provided opportunities to Mindanao scholars through the SES. This year's delegation from Mindanao include Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera, Prof. Migs Mansueto, Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, and Dr. Ian Clark Parcon. Dr. Juichiro Tanabe of Waseda University is the Conference Chair.

Statement of the SES expressing its opposition to the proposal to remove Ethics in the GE Curriculum

We, members of the Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, express our strong opposition to the proposal to remove ethics in college. Such move is bereft of merit and is ignorant as to the value and purpose of the teaching of the course, which is thoroughly rooted in the integral and critical function of higher education. The proposal to transfer it to Senior High School deprives college students of the teaching of ethics as a professional course, which is crucial in their civic engagements and the pursuit of a democratic society that can only be grounded in responsible citizenship and critical thinking.  The direction of Edcom and its advisers from the technical panels of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reduces our whole education system into a mode of creating docile workers who will constitute the labor force that will serve the whims and interests of a capital intensive and consumer driven globalized neoliberal economic order. It only breeds our subser...
