MSU-IIT to host 5th Politics and Culture Conference in May 2023


The Philosophy Department of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology will host the 5th Philippine Politics and Culture Conference, May 5 and 6, 2023 The theme for this year is "Grassroots Philosophies in the Philippines." Mr. Menelito Mansueto is Conference Chair while Dr. Rogelio Bayod is co-chair. Cor Jesu College is co-host.

Grassroots philosophies refer to emerging concepts and critical questions that are rooted in universal human experience. It is a manner of thinking that is not limited by geography, tradition, or history. It arises out of the different methods of philosophizing that help human beings reflect and understand their political, social, cultural and religious experiences. Examples of such attempts include the works of Fr. Michael Moga, Fr. Dionisio Miranda, Fr. Albert Alejo, Bro. Karlito Gaspar, and Fr. Jose Conrado Estafia. 

Confirmed speakers include Dr. Daniel Mishori of Tel Aviv University (keynote address), Fr. Jose Conrado Estafia of Holy Name University and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran, Dr. Raniel Reyes of the University of Santo Tomas, Dr. Vida Mia Valverde of Ateneo de Davao University, and PD Bruce Colao of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The Call for Papers will be released soon. The event is purely online and presentations will be done via Zoom. The Philippine Politics and Culture Conference started in 2017 at Nagoya University. It was hosted by Dr. Wataru Kusaka and co-organized by Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc and Dr. Rogelio Bayod. For inquiries, send an email to migs_mansueto@yahoo.com.

Christopher Ryan Maboloc: An Intellectual Biography

By Menelito Mansueto (MSU-IIT)  Christopher Ryan Maboloc is a Davao-based Filipino scholar known for his work in Social and Political Philosophy, Bioethics, Philippine Democracy, and the Philosophy of Technology. He is an Associate Professor at Ateneo de Davao University and a Visiting Professor at Silliman University. His body of work often engages with topics of social justice, structural inequality, and political ethics, particularly in the context of the Philippines.
