Social Ethics Society

Dr. Mansoor Limba, a professor at Ateneo de Davao University and an expert in Islamic Studies and the Bangsamoro, will deliver a keynote lecture in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference in February 2025. Dr. Limba finished his doctorate at Tehran University in Iran. He has written important books and has translated from Arabic to English important works on Islamic Studies. The SES Conference will focus on Mindanao and the philosophical perspectives that have defined its history, culture and society. The 15th SES Conference will be held at Mergrande Resort in Davao City on February 6 and 7, 2025. It will be hosted by North Valley College. Other speakers include Dr. Asuna Yoshizawa (Kyoko), Bro. Dr. Juichiro Tanabe of Waseda University in Tokyo will deliver his keynote address in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference in 2025. Dr. Tanabe is an expert in Peace and Conflict Studies. He finished his doctorate at the University of Bradford in the UK. At present, he is doing research work with Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc on the Gaza War. Dr. Tanabe has collaborated with the SES this year, including in talks that he gave during the Politics and Culture Conference and the Philosophy of Science Webinar. 

Bro. Noelvic Deloria, President of Holy Cross of Davao College, will give the keynote address in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference slated early next year in Davao City. Bro. Deloria, a well-loved leader in the field of education, will talk about peace building in Mindanao and the philosophy behind it, a story he revealed to Dr. Roger Bayod and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc when the two paid him a courtesy visit at HCDC and the Sacred Heart house in Davao City. The 15th SES Conference will be held on February 6 and 7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. It will be hosted by North Valley College. Dr. Asuna Yoshizawa, an affiliate researcher at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University in Japan, will be one of the keynote lecturers in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference. Dr. Yoshizawa is an expert in the field of Area Studies and has done research projects in Iligan City and Bohol.  The 15th Social Ethics Society Conference will be held this coming February 6-7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. The event is in-person. The theme of the conference is, "History, Politics and Culture: Philosophical Perspectives on Mindanao." As the year slowly winds down, let's talk about the accomplishments of the Social Ethics Society for 2024. We are grateful to all the men and women who have contributed to the growth and success of the SES in the many years of its existence as it continues to pursue its mission and vision.  The 14th Social Ethics Society Conference was held in February at Haven's Dew Resort in Kapatagan, Davao del Sur. A total of 60 participants joined the in-person event that was held at the beautiful venue. There were 35 papers delivered including five plenary lectures from leading scholars and thinkers.  The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy released the special Issue on Philippine Politics and Society with papers from leading scholars here and abroad. The editor of the issue was Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc's book The Question of Justice in Contemporary Liberal Theory is finally out. The book, which has ten chapters, discusses modern liberalism and the critical reactions to it, including the perspectives from Robert Nozick, Iris Marion Young, Michael Sandel, Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum, and Thomas Pogge.   Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc discussed Luciano Floridi's ethics of information during the World Philosophy Day held at North Valley College. Dr. Maboloc explained the meaning and purpose of information, the idea of digital agents and moral agents, the implications of the production, targeting and consumption of information, and its ethical implications to democracy. The event was organized by Dr. Rogelio Bayod. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon also delivered a talk on the nature and difference between deliberative and agonistic politics to more than a thousand students. 

  Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, and Dr. Ian Clark Parcon, together with more than a thousand students of North Valley College, joined hands to truly celebrate the World Philosophy Day with a Forum on Governance and Sustainability.  Dr. Bayod started by giving the rationale of the activity. Dr. Parcon gave a talk on liberal and agonistic democracy. It was followed by an interactive lecture given by Dr. Maboloc on information ethics and its implications to democracy. Faculty and students from the University of Southern Mindanao and the Southern Baptist College attended the event. Dr. Erwin Mallo and Prof. Bryan Tumlad of USM were also present in the occasion meant to highlight the important role of philosophy.

Papers presented during the 6th Politics and Culture Conference will be considered for publication in a Special Issue to be released early next year. The papers will be subject to a review process.  The deadline for the submission of papers is November 30, 2024.   The Social Ethics Society is the co-sponsor of the successful Philosophy of Science webinar held on November 16, 2024 via Zoom. The Theology Department of Ateneo de Davao University, through the PhD in Theology class of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is the main sponsor. The speakers include Dr. Juichiro Tanabe (Waseda University) who discussed the relevance of science in Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Rogelio Bayod (North Valley College) who talked about indigenous wisdom and modern technology, Dr. Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn) who explained integral pluralism, and Dr. Maboloc who shared his position paper on human cloning. Dr. Roawie Quimba, Chair of the Theology Department of Ateneo, gave the opening remarks. Prof. Migs Mansueto and Ms. Sweet Aviles hosted the three-hour online event. 

Ateneo de Davao University has awarded a publication incentive to Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc for his book Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte. The book was published in 2022 under Elzystyle Publishing through Dr. Mansoor Limba. The information was relayed to the author by Dr. Lourdesita Chan, chairperson of the University Research Council.  The book has ten chapters that provides a clinical assessment and a post-modern theoretical analysis of the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte using the perspective of Chantal Mouffe. The book is an offshoot of the research of the Davao-based scholar which was also funded by the university and presented at Nagoya University in 2017. Dr. Wataru Kusaka wrote the Foreword of the book. 

43. Maricar Juaneza is an associate professor at the University of Southern Mindanao in Kabacan, North Cotabato. She holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines in Diliman and a masters degree in Philosophy from Ateneo de Davao University. Her interests are philosophy of language and post-modern philosophy. She also coaches the college girls basketball team.  44. Randy Ponteras graduated at the Saint Francis Xavier College Seminary. An outstanding public servant, he taught at the University of Mindanao and at Ateneo de Davao University. Living what he teaches his students, he is active in the advocacy for workers' rights and good governance. He is also a political consultant of various cause oriented groups in Davao City.  45. Bernard Escarza is part of the group of young academics who learned the tenets of Marxism from Dr. Bautista while studying for his masters at Ateneo de Davao University. 30. Dr. Arnel Morte teaches at the Central Mindanao University in Musuan, Bukidnon. He is a regular fixture in both local and national conferences. He writes on Philippine politics and how it juxtaposes with different theories, including deliberative democracy and ethical governance. He took his masters at Ateneo de Davao University. 31. Christian Inovejas is one of the young guns during the time of Dr. Romulo Bautista at Ateneo de Davao University. He serves as chairman of the Philosophy Department of Bukidnon State University. His work is influenced by his existentialist stance on vital issues and questions. He is one of the pioneers of a newly formed philosophical society based in Bukidnon.  32. Givheart Dano is a glimmer of hope when it comes to scholarship in Mindanao. Young and bright, he has published several papers on education, democracy and ethics.
