11 International Researchers complete Global Summer School on Climate and Human Mobility at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand

The Humanitarian Observatory for Policy and Education in Southeast Asia, an organization based in Chiang Mai University, has awarded completion certificates to 11 international researchers who finished the program in the Global Summer School on Climate Change and Human Mobility held at the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathum Thani in Thailand.

Dr. Thida Chaiyapa, head of HOPESEA and the chief organizer of the event. expressed her elation and showed appreciation for the efforts of the participants and climate change experts who delivered lectures and helped direct the field work in Thailand's Ayutthaya Province. The researchers conducted interviews and also visited cultural heritage sites.

Dr. Paula Banerjee, the director of the AIT Center on Gender and Forced Migration, gave an inspirationional talk during the week-long event. Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, the former governor of Bangkok, also delivered a talk. Below is the list of researchers who completed the Global Summer School on Climate Change and Human Mobility:

The research outputs of the Climate School will be published in a special issue of an Q1 journal. The topics in the cohort include gender based human mobility, climate modeling and disaster response management, economic as well as social impact assessment of disasters, resilience and sustainability, climate policy and the study of indigenous practices.

The summer school was jointly organized by Chiang Mai University, Thammasat University and the Asian Institute of Technology. Out of the 800 applicants worldwide, 25 were called for a final online interview and screening by a panel of experts from the host universities. The summer program is funded by the Canadian Government.

Statement of the SES expressing its opposition to the proposal to remove Ethics in the GE Curriculum

We, members of the Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society, express our strong opposition to the proposal to remove ethics in college. Such move is bereft of merit and is ignorant as to the value and purpose of the teaching of the course, which is thoroughly rooted in the integral and critical function of higher education. The proposal to transfer it to Senior High School deprives college students of the teaching of ethics as a professional course, which is crucial in their civic engagements and the pursuit of a democratic society that can only be grounded in responsible citizenship and critical thinking. The direction of Edcom and its advisers from the technical panels of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reduces our whole education system into a mode of creating docile workers who will constitute the labor force that will serve the whims and interests of a capital intensive and consumer driven globalized neoliberal economic order.
