16th SES Conference successfully held

 

The Social Ethics Society, in cooperation with Holy Cross College of Davao and North Valley College, has successfully held its 16th annual conference, February 18-20, 2026. Dr. Wataru Kusaka gave the keynote address. A total of 90 academics, scholars, researchers, and students attended the event. Seventy (70) papers were delivered on the theme "Is moral education a failure?". Dr. Rogelio Bayod of North Valley College chaired the conference while Fr. Dexter Veloso acted as overall Chair. MULAT (HCDC Philosophy majors), led by Noel Andrada, served as the steering committee.

Fr. Urbano Pardillo, in his welcome remarks, challenged the participants to deepen their commitment to education by helping create holistic human beings. The plenary speakers include Dr. Jeffry Ocay (EVSU), Dr. Bernard Caslib Jr (UP Manila), Fr. Jose Conrado Estafia (HNU), Dr. Godiva Eviota-Rivera (MSU Main), and Dr. Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn). In his closing remarks, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc emphasized that the SES Conference is meant to provide a venue for Mindanao and Visayas academics to present their research outputs and showcase their capabilities and competence in the field of philosophy and ethics. 

In attendance in the conference include academics from UP Diliman, UP Manila, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, University of San Carlos, Bohol Island State University, Central Mindanao University, Davao Oriental State University, Bukidnon State University, MSU GenSan, MSU-IIT, San Pedro College, St. Mary's Seminary, St. Francis Xavier College Seminary, Davao del Norte State College, North Valley College, Eastern Visayas State University, Pampanga State University, NU East Ortigas, MSU Main, University of Mindanao, Caraga State University, Cebu International University, Southern Christian College, San Isidro College, Siquijor State University, Urios University, Ateneo de Davao University, and the University of Southern Mindanao.


During the conference, SES officials also held a meeting with representatives from PUP to discuss the planned second SES-PUP International Ethics Society that will be held again at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. According to Dr. Maboloc, this year's event will focus on global justice and sustainability. Associate Professor Agnes Oblefias of PUP expressed PUP's full support for the event that has drawn top academics during its first edition held last year in Tokyo. Meanwhile, the SES Board also met with representatives from USM to discuss future collaborations, in particular USM's possible hosting of a midyear conference.

Statement of the SES BOD Chair

The Social Ethics Society was founded in 2010 by the late Dr. Romulo Bautista, a professor at Ateneo de Davao University who did his doctorate on Marx at the University of Madrid in Spain, and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, then a young teacher at Ateneo de Davao. The first SES Conference was held at the University of Mindanao. Its original membership was only 15, consisting mainly of the masters students of the two founders. While in the peripheries of academia, the SES pursued its goals of helping teachers in Mindanao develop their craft in ways that is consistent with philosophy as an exercise of the human will and as the highest expression of the human intellect.  When its proponents presented the concept, it was suggested that the Union of Philosophical Societies and Associations in the Philippines (USAPP) will lobby for a new bill that will professionalize philosophy in the country.
