CRB Maboloc completes ASAP Yale Global Justice Fellowship

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc completed his ASAP Yale Global Justice Program Fellowship. He was supervised by Dr. Thomas Pogge The research of Dr. Maboloc was on the roots of historical injustice in Muslim Mindanao and the causal factors of poverty in the region. The fellows received their Certificate of Completion during an online ceremony. Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University encouraged the fellows to apply what they learned from the program to help solve global poverty.  There are 14 ASAP (Academics Stand Against Poverty) fellows in the first cohort, which was launched in early January this year. The scholars, based in countries such as India, the UK, the United States, Germany, Brazil and the Philippines, come from diverse backgrounds and expertise. They developed research projects and wrote papers under the supervision of renowned philosophers from top universities, including Yale and Cambridge University. 

Tel Aviv University scholar to visit Mindanao

  Dr. Daniel Mishori, at present a lecturer at the Department of Exact Sciences at Tel Aviv University in Israel, will visit Mindanao in February 2025 as part of his sabbatical. This was revealed by Dr. Rogelio Bayod, who has invited Dr. Mishori for a second visit. The scholar is scheduled to give a lecture in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference. He will also give talks at North Valley College in Kidapawan City and the Holy Cross of Davao College. Dr. Mishori is an expert in Healthcare Sciences and Ethics. He has previously visited Davao City in October 2019 and visited Indigenous Communities in Davao del Sur thereafter with Dr. Bayod. In coordination with the SES, Dr. Bayod has invited international scholars to the region, including Dr. Darryl Macer, Dr. Wataru Kusaka, and Dr. Juichiro Tanabe. 

Politics and Culture Special Issue Volume 2 to be released in February 2025

The SES Journal of Applied Philosophy will release the Politics and Culture Special Issue Volume 2 in February 2025. Dr. Rogelio Bayod of North Valley College and Mr. Menelito Mansueto of MSU-IIT are the editors of the latest Special Issue.  The volume includes papers by Dr. Juichiro Tanabe (Waseda), Dr. Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn), and Dr. Daniel Mishori (Tel Aviv). Majority of the papers are from the proceedings of the 6th Politics and Culture Conference in 2024.

  The 15th Social Ethics Society Conference will be held this coming February 6-7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. The event is in-person. The theme of the conference is, "History, Politics and Culture: Philosophical Perspectives on Mindanao." It will be hosted by North Valley College. SES to hold Board Meeting

The Board of Directors of the Social Ethics Society will hold a meeting on December 15, 2024 in Davao City. The agenda include the forthcoming 15th SES Conference, the latest issue and indexing of the SES Journal, and evaluation and planning. Fr. Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc holds successful book signing

  Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, author of The Question of Justice in Contemporary Liberal Theory, successfully held a Book Signing event at Balai Torrentira, Matina Town Square in Davao City on December 7, 2024. The event was sponsored by Dr. Moises Torrentira Jr., Fr. Dexter Veloso, and CEO Raymond Taopa. Academics, lawyers and former students of the author attended the event. The book is the second monograph of the author published by Elzystyle Publishing and distributed worldwide by Amazon.

Decolonial turn in the Philippine South by Menelito Mansueto released

  Decolonial Turn in the Philippine South, a book by Menelito Mansueto, has been released. Published by KDP in the United States, the book is a collection of essays by the young scholar from Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology. Consisting of five chapters, it discusses the radical turn of philosophical thinking in Mindanao, through the lenses of Miranda Fricker, Enrique Dussell, Chantal Mouffe, and Friedrich Nietzsche. The book also contains short essays, including his take on controversial issues like historical revisionism. It chronicles the new movement in the Philippines when it comes to philosophical thinking, one that started with the radical turn in the writings of scholars from Mindanao challenging convention and the traditional authors from the country's top universities.  Mansueto teaches Philosophy at MSU-IIT. Dr. Mansoor Limba to give keynote lecture in the 15th SES Conference

Dr. Mansoor Limba, a professor at Ateneo de Davao University and an expert in Islamic Studies and the Bangsamoro, will deliver a keynote lecture in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference in February 2025. Dr. Limba finished his doctorate at Tehran University in Iran. He has written important books and has translated from Arabic to English important works on Islamic Studies. The SES Conference will focus on Mindanao and the philosophical perspectives that have defined its history, culture and society. Dr. Juichiro Tanabe to deliver keynote lecture in the 15th SES Conference

Dr. Juichiro Tanabe of Waseda University in Tokyo will deliver his keynote address in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference in 2025. Dr. Tanabe is an expert in Peace and Conflict Studies. He finished his doctorate at the University of Bradford in the UK. At present, he is doing research work with Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc on the Gaza War. Dr. Tanabe has collaborated with the SES this year, including in talks that he gave during the Politics and Culture Conference and the Philosophy of Science Webinar. 

Bro. Noelvic Deloria to keynote 15th SES Conference

Bro. Noelvic Deloria, President of Holy Cross of Davao College, will give the keynote address in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference slated early next year in Davao City. Bro. Deloria, a well-loved leader in the field of education, will talk about peace building in Mindanao and the philosophy behind it, a story he revealed to Dr. Roger Bayod and Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc when the two paid him a courtesy visit at HCDC and the Sacred Heart house in Davao City. The 15th SES Conference will be held on February 6 and 7, 2025 at Mergrande Resort in Davao City. It will be hosted by North Valley College. Dr. Asuna Yoshizawa, an affiliate researcher at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University in Japan, will be one of the keynote lecturers in the 15th Social Ethics Society Conference. SES in 2024 - A Report

As the year slowly winds down, let's talk about the accomplishments of the Social Ethics Society for 2024. We are grateful to all the men and women who have contributed to the growth and success of the SES in the many years of its existence as it continues to pursue its mission and vision.  The 14th Social Ethics Society Conference was held in February at Haven's Dew Resort in Kapatagan, Davao del Sur. A total of 60 participants joined the in-person event that was held at the beautiful venue. There were 35 papers delivered including five plenary lectures from leading scholars and thinkers.  The Social Ethics Society Journal of Applied Philosophy released the special Issue on Philippine Politics and Society with papers from leading scholars here and abroad. The editor of the issue was Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc. The Question of Justice in Contemporary Liberal Theory by CRB Maboloc released

Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc's book The Question of Justice in Contemporary Liberal Theory is finally out. The book, which has ten chapters, discusses modern liberalism and the critical reactions to it, including the perspectives from Robert Nozick, Iris Marion Young, Michael Sandel, Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum, and Thomas Pogge. CRB Maboloc discusses Ethics of Information during World Philosophy Day

  Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc discussed Luciano Floridi's ethics of information during the World Philosophy Day held at North Valley College. Dr. Maboloc explained the meaning and purpose of information, the idea of digital agents and moral agents, the implications of the production, targeting and consumption of information, and its ethical implications to democracy. The event was organized by Dr. Rogelio Bayod. Dr. Ian Clark Parcon also delivered a talk on the nature and difference between deliberative and agonistic politics to more than a thousand students. 

World Philosophy Day at North Valley College

  Dr. Rogelio Bayod, Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc, and Dr. Ian Clark Parcon, together with more than a thousand students of North Valley College, joined hands to truly celebrate the World Philosophy Day with a Forum on Governance and Sustainability.  Dr. Bayod started by giving the rationale of the activity. Dr. Parcon gave a talk on liberal and agonistic democracy. It was followed by an interactive lecture given by Dr. Maboloc on information ethics and its implications to democracy. Faculty and students from the University of Southern Mindanao and the Southern Baptist College attended the event. Dr. Erwin Mallo and Prof. Bryan Tumlad of USM were also present in the occasion meant to highlight the important role of philosophy.

Papers presented during the 6th Politics and Culture Conference will be considered for publication in a Special Issue to be released early next year. The papers will be subject to a review process.  The deadline for the submission of papers is November 30, 2024. Philosophy of Science Webinar held successfully

  The Social Ethics Society is the co-sponsor of the successful Philosophy of Science webinar held on November 16, 2024 via Zoom. The Theology Department of Ateneo de Davao University, through the PhD in Theology class of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc is the main sponsor. The speakers include Dr. Juichiro Tanabe (Waseda University) who discussed the relevance of science in Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Rogelio Bayod (North Valley College) who talked about indigenous wisdom and modern technology, Dr. Layne Hartsell (Chulalongkorn) who explained integral pluralism, and Dr. Maboloc who shared his position paper on human cloning. Dr. Roawie Quimba, Chair of the Theology Department of Ateneo, gave the opening remarks. Prof. Migs Mansueto and Ms. Sweet Aviles hosted the three-hour online event. 

Ateneo awards Publication Incentive to Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte

Ateneo de Davao University has awarded a publication incentive to Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc for his book Radical Democracy in the Time of Duterte. The book was published in 2022 under Elzystyle Publishing through Dr. Mansoor Limba. The information was relayed to the author by Dr. Lourdesita Chan, chairperson of the University Research Council.  The book has ten chapters that provides a clinical assessment and a post-modern theoretical analysis of the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte using the perspective of Chantal Mouffe. The book is an offshoot of the research of the Davao-based scholar which was also funded by the university and presented at Nagoya University in 2017. Dr. Wataru Kusaka wrote the Foreword of the book.

43. Maricar Juaneza is an associate professor at the University of Southern Mindanao in Kabacan, North Cotabato. She holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines in Diliman and a masters degree in Philosophy from Ateneo de Davao University. Her interests are philosophy of language and post-modern philosophy. She also coaches the college girls basketball team.  44. Randy Ponteras graduated at the Saint Francis Xavier College Seminary. An outstanding public servant, he taught at the University of Mindanao and at Ateneo de Davao University. Living what he teaches his students, he is active in the advocacy for workers' rights and good governance. He is also a political consultant of various cause oriented groups in Davao City.  45. 30. Dr. Arnel Morte teaches at the Central Mindanao University in Musuan, Bukidnon. He is a regular fixture in both local and national conferences. He writes on Philippine politics and how it juxtaposes with different theories, including deliberative democracy and ethical governance. He took his masters at Ateneo de Davao University. 31. Christian Inovejas is one of the young guns during the time of Dr. Romulo Bautista at Ateneo de Davao University. He serves as chairman of the Philosophy Department of Bukidnon State University. His work is influenced by his existentialist stance on vital issues and questions. He is one of the pioneers of a newly formed philosophical society based in Bukidnon.  32. 23. Prof. Rex Rola is the most prominent philosophy teacher of Ateneo de Davao University's philosophy department. He emphasizes rigor and discipline in the works of his students, both in the undergraduate and graduate levels. A living Socrates, in fact, is not an overstatement. Recently, he is involved in improving the pedagogical tools used by Deped through the trainings he conducts under the department. 24. Gerry Arambala, who comes originally from Cebu City, has taught at the University of San Carlos, Tabor Hill College, La Salle University in Ozamiz, and currently, at the Mindanao State University in General Santos City. 15. Prof. Al Quiloppe taught at Notre Dame of Marbel University and was the director of its Peace Institute. He was also in charge of its environmental advocacy while serving as an administrator in the school. He wrote and has delivered important papers on peace and environmental ethics. Dr. Quiloppe has degrees in philosophy and psychology. 16. Prof. Jose Ma. Tomacruz, who succumbed to Covid-19, was an imposing figure who was characteristic of a true fiscalizer in academia. He studied at San Jose Seminary, the University of Santo Tomas where he graduated magna cum laude, the University of Padova in Italy, the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, and Linköping University in Sweden. 8. Prof. Menelito Mansueto is probably one of the most courageous among the young scholars from the South. He is originally from Bohol and has taught at UST, FEU Diliman, BISU and now, at MSU-IIT. He juxtaposes philosophy with history and has taken the cudgels defending the interpretation of radical democracy in the works of Dr. Christopher Ryan Maboloc. 9. Prof. Alvert Dalona is the former chairman of the Philosophy Department of MSU-IIT. The school is the only institution in the country that offers applied philosophy as a major. Davao City -  The Social Ethics Society (SES) would like to present the outstanding local scholars, researchers, and academics, or the philosophers from the South. This list and the others that will follow are not meant to be exhaustive. The SES simply wishes to introduce several people who are teaching or have taught philosophy in schools here in Mindanao.  1. Dr. Raymond Pavo, dean and professor at UP Mindanao, is a young scholar who has devoted his time understanding the implications of modernity and urbanization in the idea of democratic space.
